Un signorotto e sua moglie abitano in una casa grande e confortevole ai margini del bosco. I due coniugi non hanno avuto figli, per questo motivo l’uomo, alquanto stizzoso, maltratta la moglie. Un giorno, mentre il marito è fuori di casa, la donna (triste com'è) sente là fuori il richiamo di un giocattolaio ambulante che propone la sua mercanzia. Perciò, lo chiama e fra i tanti balocchi compra un Cavallino a dondolo di legno.
