In the spring of 1814, Napoleon Bonaparte was defeated. This would have been the end of him, if Europe's rulers had had their way. In May 1943, a young, pregnant Frenchwoman called Lucie Aubrac engineered the escape of her husband Raymond from the clutches of Klaus Barbie, the feared Gestapo chief.
