As soon as Kerstin Kvist arrives at remote, ivy-covered Lydstep Old Hall in Essex, she feels like a character in a gothic novel. Questo romanzo di Gustav Meyrink, scrittore ed esoterista, viene pubblicato nel 1917, subito dopo il grande successo de "Il Golem", ma in realtà venne scritto in contemporanea al Golem dal 1906 al 1916, e il parallelo tra le due città, Praga e Amsterdam, è molto interessante.
