But the bus is held up by gangsters. Skeen goes into action and foils the hijacking. But his heroism engenders even more problems and perils.

In response to a string of gold thefts in a Mother Lode mine, Quincannon goes undercover as a newly hired miner to identify and capture the men responsible. Meanwhile, Sabina finds herself not only making plans for her and Quincannon’s wedding, but also investigating both an audacious real estate scam and an abusive young man’s villainous secret.

Quincannon’s pursuit of two con men who have absconded to Hawaii with a considerable sum of his employer’s assets dovetails nicely with Sabina’s vision of a second honeymoon. In The Bughouse Affair, this first of a new series of lighthearted historical mysteries set in 1890s San Francisco, former Pinkerton operative Sabina Carpenter and her detective partner, ex-Secret Service agent John Quincannon, undertake what initially appear to be two unrelated investigations. Sabina's case involves the hunt for a ruthless lady "dip" who uses fiendish means to relieve her victims of their valuables at Chutes Amusement Park and other crowded places. Quincannon, meanwhile, is after a slippery housebreaker who targets the homes of wealthy residents.

When a pleasant afternoon's bicycling through Golden Gate Park with a friend ends with the revelation of threatening letters, followed by a gunshot in a mansion garden, Sabina Carpenter knows this is a case that demands her immediate and undivided attention. The questions her partner John Quincannon has to unravel are not difficult: Wrixton, a wealthy banker, has met his extortionist's first demand, but the order to pay another $5,000 is too much to face. The banker's real problem is something he doesn't want to reveal.

Noch einen "Ripper"-Mord erwartet Sherlock Holmes. Doch der wird alles andere in den Schatten stellen! Allerdings ist "Jack the Ripper", wie alle Welt den so brutal wirkenden Mörder von Whitechapel längst nennt, durch die große Aufmerksamkeit der Öffentlichkeit zur Untätigkeit verdammt. Das ändert sich einen letzten grausamen Abend lang, als ganz London auf den unerwarteten Rücktritt des Polizeichefs Sir Charles Warren starrt. Die Chance für den "Ripper", sein Werk zu vollenden - weshalb er sich als sein achtes Opfer am Abend des 8. Novembers 1888 eine wahre "Mary Jane Kelly" sucht.

Es ist ein grausames Schlachtfeld, ein menschliches Inferno - das die Ermittler am vorerst letzten Tatort von "Jack the Ripper" vorfinden. Für Sherlock Holmes allerdings ist es das finale Puzzleteil, um den grausamen Mörder endlich dingfest zu machen. Doch es kommt im Showdown komplett anders, als der große Detektiv erwartet hat. Und es soll sich zeigen, dass die bis hierhin fiktionale Geschichte vom wahren Wesen "Jack the Rippers" in eine noch viel grausamere, noch viel abgründigere Realität führt.

Erstmals verlässt "Jack the Ripper" sein eigentliches Revier, Whitechapel. Und mordet ein zweites Mal in nur einer Nacht: Catherine Eddowes. Doch Sherlock Holmes ist ihm weiter dicht auf den Fersen, kann die Symbolspuren, die der "Ripper" an seinen Tatorten hinterlässt, immer präziser deuten.

Noch einmal versuchen Sherlock Holmes und Doktor Watson, dem immer grausamer agierenden Mörder "Jack the Ripper" eine Falle zu stellen. Präzise leitet der große Detektiv aus der Chronologie der bisherigen Morde und der in ihnen enthaltenen Symbolismen eine Prognose für den mutmaßlich nächsten Tatort ab. Um nur wenige Meter soll sich Holmes diesmal irren. Und tatsächlich wird der "Ripper" erstmals auch wirklich bei einer seiner Taten gestört, kann den so präzise geplanten Symbolmord an Elizabeth Stride nicht wie erhofft zu Ende bringen. Aber genau das "muss" er.

Am zweiten Weihnachtstag 1887 liegt in einem Hauseingang in Whitechapel / London ein erstes Opfer jenes Mörders, der später einmal "Jack the Ripper" genannt werden wird: "Fairy Fay". Sie ist das "Schlüsselopfer" - das die verheerendste Mordserie der Geschichte auslösen wird. Kein Geringerer als der berühmte Detektiv Sherlock Holmes nimmt auf Bitten von Scotland Yard die Spur auf. Und findet erste Hinweise auf einen bisher unbekannten (aber verdammt realen) Symbol-Kosmos, der diesen primären Ripper-Mord mit allen folgenden verbinden wird.
