In Craven House, among the shifting, uncertain world of the English boardinghouse, with its sad population of the shabby genteel on the way down and the eternal optimists who would never get up or on, the young Patrick Hamilton, with loving, horrified fascination, first mapped out the territory that he would make uniquely his own. Although many of Hamilton's lifelong interests are here, they are handled with a youthful brio and optimism conspicuously absent from his later work.

Happy House by Jane D. Abbott (1881-1968) was recently released into the public domain. It is a lovely, articulate look at life as a recent college graduate in 1920s America. Writing in the vein of Louisa May Alcott et. al., Ms. Abbott delights in this tale of two young women who share a name and decide on an identity switch that sends one of them on the trip of a lifetime. A plethora of high-spirited New Englanders peoples this tale performed by professional actor and narrator Sara Morsey.

A House to Let is a short story originally published in 1858 in the Christmas edition of Dickens' Household Words magazine. The plot concerns an elderly woman, Sophonisba, who notices signs of life in a supposedly empty dilapidated house (the eponymous "House to Let") opposite her own, and employs the efforts of an elderly admirer, Jabez Jarber, and her servant, Trottle, to discover what is happening within.

A House of Pomegranates is a collection of four long stories, which was first was published in 1891: "The Young King"; "The Birthday of the Infanta"; "The Fisherman and His Soul"; and "The Star-Child".

The first collection of the exploits of A.J. Raffles and his friend Bunny Manders was published as The Amateur Cracksman in 1899. The characters of Raffles and Bunny were possibly inspired by his brother-in-law's creations, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, although they are on the opposite side of the law.
