"La Déclaration des droits de l'homme et du citoyen" est adoptée le 26 août 1789 par l'Assemblée nationale, constituée deux mois plus tôt. Ce texte fondateur de la Révolution française, et plus largement de l'Histoire de France, affirme que "Tous les Hommes naissent et demeurent libres et égaux en droits", et pose les bases de république et de démocratie. Ses principes sont réaffirmés au sortir de la Seconde Guerre mondiale dans le préambule de la Constitution française du 27 octobre 1946.
