Flatboats were the most prolific type of vessel on the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers during the early 1800s. Thousands of these boats descended the two rivers each year, carrying not only valuable cargo to New Orleans but also western-bound emigrants to newly opened territories. By the late 1800s, flatboats had completely disappeared, and no intact examples were known to exist. That changed in 2000, when local residents found a wreck on the Ohio River shoreline in Illinois.

Granny Clampett, on the TV sitcom The Beverly Hillbillies, described the War Between the States as "when the Yankees invaded America" and, indeed, it was! Television shows like The Adventures of Ozzy and Harriett and The Andy Griffith Show mirrored the innocence of life in the dusty city of Tucson, AZ. But the sun-baked desert surrounding Tucson was hiding a sinister secret. A psychopath names Charles Schmid, later nicknamed the "Pied Piper of Tucson" by Life magazine, would steal that innocence away, along with the lives of three beautiful teenage girls.

In 2005, Margaret Jones Bolsterli learned that her great-great-grandfather was a free mulatto named Jordan Chavis, who owned an antebellum plantation near Vicksburg, Mississippi. The news was a shock; Bolsterli had heard about the plantation in family stories told during her Arkansas Delta childhood, but Chavis' name and race had never been mentioned. With further exploration, Bolsterli found that when Chavis' children crossed the Mississippi River between 1859 and 1875 for exile in Arkansas, they passed into the white world, leaving the family’s racial history completely behind.

The Huck Finn of foreign correspondents provides a colorful account of old Honolulu, the island nobility, the City of Refuge on the Kona coast, and the active volcano of Kilauea. These selections of Mark Twain's newspaper dispatches are both charming and informative. The light touch of the great humorist is seldom missing as he reveals the "loveliest fleet of islands that lie anchored in any ocean".

Kellers wohl berühmteste Novelle: "Kleider machen Leute" über den armen Schneiderlehrling Wenzel Strapinski und eine folgenreiche Verwechslung. Strapinski wandert auf der Suche nach einer Anstellung verloren durch die Straßen. Der sehr auf sein Äußeres bedachte Schneider besitzt nicht mehr als eine einzige Garnitur edler Kleidung. Doch aufgrund seines edlen Aussehens wird er in der Stadt Goldach für einen polnischen Grafen gehalten.

Gottfried Keller wurde 1819 in Zürich geboren. Er starb 1890 ebenfalls in Zürich. "Kleider machen Leute" (1874) ist wohl die bekannteste Novelle Kellers aus dem Zyklus "Die Leute von Seldwyla". Zahlreiche Verfilmungen und Vertonungen hat das Werk erfahren. Keller vereint hier meisterlich komische Gesellschaftskritik mit einer poetischen Liebeshandlung. Als Satiriker nimmt Keller Eigen- und Standesdünkel ebenso aufs Korn wie Gutgläubigkeit und Unterwürfigkeit.

This short work of Wilde's was written during his two year incarceration for "gross indecency". This work is a letter which sorts out his life, and his love toward Lord Alfred Douglas. Wilde wrote this as a farewell letter to Douglas.
