Fort Worth has been called The City Where the West Begins, Cowtown, and the silent partner in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. None of these descriptions quite tells the story of this city and its people. Since its founding in the mid nineteenth-century as a military outpost, Fort Worth has gone through many phases - cattle, oil, aviation, and tourist. The little village on the Trinity has grown up to become a global city that is a melting pot of economic forces and diverse cultures.

When Dawn House purchased a teetering cabin in Southern Utah, she didn't have it torn down for scrap but began to examine the layers of its wallpaper, encrusted with paste and the yellow of time. She found an extraordinary story within: of pioneer misfortune, lost loves, struggles against nature, ordinary homesteading, and the formation of modern Utah.

From its quiet beginnings as a picnic grounds in 1872 to its gradual evolution into an amusement park, Geauga Lake became one of Northeast Ohio's most famous attractions. The story of Geauga Lake take listeners through its entire history—from its dramatic climb in status to become a nationally recognized megapark to its almost inexplicable and rapid decline and demise in 2007. The fascinating story illuminates the changing strategies that different owners brought to the park and captures the many changes that regularly transformed the midway.

Trains, planes, and automobiles arrive and forever change the lives of Alaskans throughout Aunt Phil’s Trunk, Volume Three. Hardy souls with hammers and drills, axes and mattocks, mauls and gauges found it took muscle and endurance to lay railroad tracks in Alaska’s untamed wilderness. Other adventurers brought automobiles and airplanes north that transformed the way we mined resources, explored the country and traveled the Great Land.

The Stafford-Townsend feud began with an 1871 shootout in Columbus, Texas, followed by the deaths of the Stafford brothers in 1890. The second phase blossomed after 1898 with the assassination of Larkin Hope, and concluded in 1911 with the violent deaths of Marion Hope, Jim Townsend, and Will Clements, all in the space of one month.

The Massachusetts colony would be the first to organize and unite with other colonies, and one of the first to take a stand when troubles developed with England, thereby leading the cause for independence. It was John Hancock of Massachusetts who would propose the Bill of Rights that still protects and guarantees the basic freedoms of Americans.

Georgia’s Golden Isles possess a complex history involving indigenous populations, colonial rivalries, and economic transformations stretching hundreds of years. During its evolution from territory contested by Spain, France, and Britain to a crucial part of the South’s cotton belt, the region has witnessed pivotal moments, including the American Revolution, the Civil War, and postbellum reconstruction. This work sets the stage for an exploration of the Golden Isles’ multifaceted past, highlighting their vital role in shaping the history of the United States.

The 1920s was a bustling time in Hollywood, as starry-eyed young women sought fame and fortune—only to discover that their dreams did not match the reality of the film industry. Edgcumb Pinchon was there to report on it all. He interviewed women who worked as “extras” in Hollywood, and was himself involved in the film business as a screenwriter and author. He describes here the hierarchy of those on set (in front of and behind the camera) with first-hand knowledge and humor.

Western outlaws terrorized the country during the late 1800s and early 1900s, robbing stagecoaches, banks, trains, and merchants. While they were fearsome, some became folk heroes and legends.

He is nearly as hybridized as the mules he writes about from his great, great grandfathers...one was a Belgian anarchist, one was a Kentucky abolitionist, and one was a missionary in the Indian Nation, to his great grandfathers...one was a teamster who became a hardware-man, and one was a circuit-riding preacher in Missouri.

On November 18, 1958, when the limestone carrier Carl D. Bradley broke up during a raging storm on Lake Michigan, it became the largest ship in Great Lakes' history to vanish beneath storm-tossed waves. Along with the Bradley, 33 crew members perished. Most of the casualties hailed from the little harbor town of Rogers City, Michigan, a community that was stung with grief when, in an instant, 23 women became widows and 53 children were left fatherless. Nevertheless, this is also a story of survival....

The Black River flows from Missouri into Arkansas, east of Branson and west of the Bootheel. It meanders where the foothills of the Ozarks begin to rise out of the Mississippi plain. The area was sparsely populated when E. R. Coleman was a young man. Like the population they served, businesses were modest, mostly small, and scattered. Arkansas was still the Bear State; slogans boasting that it was - or predicting that it would become - the "Land of Opportunity" were yet to be conceived.

The amazing story behind the creation of the Great American Flag that was built by Anchor Industries in Evansville in 1980. March 22, 2015, will mark the 35th Anniversary of the dedication of the flag at the Evansville airport. 10,000 people attended the event. The flag was never used for it's original purpose to hang from the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge over New York Harbor. Instead it was given as a gift to the US government and spent several years locked in a warehouse in DC.

How does a man serving in the Imperial Japanese Army feel when he suddenly sees his brother in the uniform of the enemy United States? How does a Japanese mother, surrounded by barbed wire in an American internment camp for enemy aliens, feel when her only son writes: "I am now an American soldier. I must fight and, if necessary, die for my country"? How does a Hawaiian-born youth feel as he lies near death in Hiroshima, a victim of history's first nuclear attack, launched by the United States?

"Carl Schurz' "States' Rights and Byron Paine" was an address he delivered at Albany Hall, Milwaukee, March 23, 1859. In it, he defended his position, which no doubt was also the position of the bulk of the anti-slavery men of the time, of states rights and the compact theory of the union.

One of the most celebrated milestones in Springfield's history is the invention of basketball. It was within the hallowed halls of Springfield College that this iconic sport was born. Springfield College, one of the oldest colleges in the United States, became the birthplace of a game that would capture the hearts and minds of millions worldwide. The spirit of competition, teamwork, and athleticism found its roots here, giving rise to the phenomenon we know as basketball.
