The battle of the Somme was the largest battle of the first world war, in which over one million men were killed or wounded, and during which the British army suffered its worst day ever with over sixty thousand casualties. The Commander in Chief of the British forces, Sir Douglas Haig, issued a despatch in the following month via the London Gazette. Part news, part propaganda this despatch failed to mention the tragic losses and maximised the minimal gains.

After his surrender to the Royal Navy, Napoleon became the object of massive English public interest. He would live out his last years on the island of St. Helena without ever admitting to being a prisoner. This close study of Napoleon in captivity attempts to reconstruct an authentic portrait of the fallen emperor by examining contemporary documents and records of public opinion.

In 1798, an initial review of France’s naval forces had led Napoleon to conclude his navy could not hope to outfight the power of the Royal Navy, which had been the dominant naval power for centuries, so he was forced to look elsewhere. After months of planning, Napoleon crafted a scheme to attack and conquer Egypt, denying the British easy access to their colonies in India, with the ultimate goal of linking up with the Sultan Tipoo in India itself and defeating the British in the field there. Napoleon sailed with Admiral Brueys and 30,000 troops that June, heading for Egypt.

1879 was a year of bloody conflict on the African continent. Cetsywayo, the Zulu chieftain, had wielded his armies with precision and care, defeating and driving his enemies before him. This courageous force finally butted heads with the British on the sweeping plains of Africa, inflicting grievous losses on the empire’s red coats. On 13 July 2008, nine American Soldiers perished while fighting a pitched battle in the village of Wanat in Afghanistan's Waygal Valley. The Battle of the Meuse-Argonne stands as the deadliest clash in American history: More than a million untested American soldiers went up against a better-trained and more experienced German army, costing more than 26,000 deaths and leaving nearly 100,000 wounded. Yet, in 47 days of intense combat, those Americans pushed back the enemy and forced the Germans to surrender, bringing the First World War to an end - a feat the British and the French had not achieved after more than three years of fighting.

In 2003, for the first time since the Second World War, the UK took part in an opposed invasion and full-scale occupation of a sovereign state - Iraq. Cabinet decided on 17th March to join the US-led invasion of Iraq. That decision was ratified by Parliament the next day and implemented the night after that. In June 2009, Prime Minister Gordon Brown ordered an Inquiry to be conducted to identify lessons that could be learned from the Iraq conflict.
