Seine Identität allerdings ist unklar, denn der Kopf bleibt verschwunden. Doch der Zufall führt Kommissar Maigret schon bei seinem ersten Besuch am Tatort in eine Bar, wo ihm die missmutige Wirtin erzählt, ihr Mann sei bereits seit einigen Tagen verschollen.
