En sommarkväll 1994 blir Inger Lövgren brutalt våldtagen i sitt hem av en okänd man. Nästan 25 år senare kontaktar hon Klas Hagberg på Göteborgspolisens Kalla fall-grupp och ber honom om hjälp. När Klas börjar gräva i fallet upptäcker han att det finns fler kvinnor som utsatts för liknande övergrepp och allting tyder på att en serievåldtäktsman fortfarande går fri. Trots chefens protester går Klas vidare och än en gång tar han hjälp av sin vän Sara Douhan, som jobbar inom hemtjänsten. Återigen tvingas de båda att tänja på reglerna i jakten efter sanningen.

Maigret hat allen Grund, schlecht gelaunt zu sein: Die ganze Welt scheint sich gegen ihn verschworen zu haben. Ein verregneter, grauer Herbst drückt Kommissar Maigret aufs Gemüt. Außerdem steht seine Pensionierung kurz bevor, was seine Stimmung auch nicht gerade aufhellt, ganz zu schweigen vom dem Mordfall, mit dem er augenblicklich befasst ist: Der Keksfabrikant Leonard Lachaume wurde erschossen im Bett aufgefunden, seine Verwandten hüllen sich allesamt in Schweigen, und die Atmosphäre im Haus der einst wohlhabenden, aber inzwischen verarmten Lachaumes könnte kaum trister sein.

Seit einem Jahr ist Maigret im Ruhestand. In seinem Häuschen duftet es nach köstlichen Ragouts und im Garten nach reifem Obst. Da wendet sich ein amerikanischer Millionärssohn an ihn - sein Vater werde bedroht, er brauche Maigrets Hilfe. Der muss nicht lange überlegen und besteigt mit dem jungen Mann ein Schiff nach New York. Kaum von Bord, verschwindet sein Auftraggeber spurlos. Maigret macht sich dennoch an die Arbeit, durchstreift die Bronx, das Greenwich Village. Mit dem American Way of Life allerdings kommt er gar nicht zurecht.

Eine anonyme Leiche: Maigret muss sich ganz auf seinen Instinkt verlassen. In Paris kündigt sich der Frühling an. Die Flüsse führen Niedrigwasser. Da fischen zwei Schiffer vor einen Arm aus dem Kanal Saint-Martin. Wenig später fördern Taucher weitere Körperteile zutage. Fest steht, bei dem Toten handelt es sich um einen Mann. Seine Identität allerdings ist unklar, denn der Kopf bleibt verschwunden. Doch der Zufall führt Kommissar Maigret schon bei seinem ersten Besuch am Tatort in eine Bar, wo ihm die missmutige Wirtin erzählt, ihr Mann sei bereits seit einigen Tagen verschollen.
