März 1938 mit seinem Freitod beim Einmarsch der Nationalsozialisten in Österreich. Geblieben ist neben Friedells berühmt gewordener "Kulturgeschichte der Neuzeit" auch die weniger bekannte "Kulturgeschichte Ägyptens und des Alten Orients" und die "Kulturgeschichte Griechenlands", welche er nicht vollenden konnte.
