World Ethics

Students sometimes ask questions whose depth is such that teachers have trouble coming up with answers. That is what happened to me on January 31, 1984, as I was teaching my Introduction to Economics course at Maisonneuve College in Montreal, Canada. Suddenly, a student raised her hand and asked me with great sincerity: “Sir, what makes the world go round, love or money?” Taken aback by the simplicity and depth of her question, I remained silent for a few seconds, made a few comments, and, remembering the lessons I had learned, asked them what they thought the answer was.

Lo que en el título se denomina ídolo es sencillamente lo que hasta ahora fue llamado verdad. El ocaso de los ídolos, dicho claramente: la vieja verdad se acerca a su final. Así escribió Nietzsche sobre este libro en Ecce Homo. A lot of people have hobbies - most of the time, that hobby is directed by their penchant for a certain thing; sometimes travel and exploration, sometimes food, and in other cases, crafts. However, there are people whose hobbies consist of sinister things: some of them desire to kill women, both young and old, children, or homosexuals.

La parola “blasfemia” viene dal latino blasphemia, a sua volta derivata dal greco βλασφημ?α, blasphemía, vocabolo composto dal verbo βλ?πτειν, bláptein, “ingiuriare”, e dal sostantivo φ?μη/φ?μα, phéme/pháma, “reputazione”. Ingiuriare reputazione! La bestemmia o blasfemia è una locuzione con contenuti dissacranti e svalutanti verso Dio, verso i santi, o più in generale verso quanto appartiene al mondo di Dio. Non lo so quale è il paese del mondo dove si bestemmia di più? Sicuramente l’Italia è un campione.
