A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

AN INDIE BESTSELLER

“One of the great thinkers of our generation . . . I feel fresher and smarter and happier for sitting down with her.”—Jameela Jamil, iWeigh Podcast

The co-host of the Maintenance Phase podcast and creator of Your Fat Friend equips you with the facts to debunk common anti-fat myths and with tools to take action for fat justice

The pushback that shows up in conversations about fat justice takes exceedingly predicable form. Losing weight is easy—calories in, calories out. Fat people are unhealthy. We’re in the midst of an obesity epidemic. Fat acceptance “glorifies obesity.” The BMI is an objective measure of size and health. Yet, these myths are as readily debunked as they are pervasive.

In “You Just Need to Lose Weight,” Aubrey Gordon equips listeners with the facts and figures to reframe myths about fatness in order to dismantle the anti-fat bias ingrained in how we think about and treat fat people. Bringing her dozen years of community organizing and training to bear, Gordon shares the rhetorical approaches she and other organizers employ to not only counter these pernicious myths, but to dismantle the anti-fat bias that so often underpin them.

As conversations about fat acceptance and fat justice continue to grow, “You Just Need to Lose Weight” will be essential to ensure that those conversations are informed, effective, and grounded in both research and history.

“Gordon tackles pervasive myths about fatness and provides the truth about them and the people they impact…[the book] couldn't have come at a more apt time.”—Teen Vogue

A must-read for everyone

Aubrey has a great voice (as we know from the Maintenance Phase podcast), so I was very glad to find out she was voicing her second book.

Another fabulous book from a fabulous author!

Enjoyed the hell out of this one! Thoughtful, well researched, and a challenging perspective for my own biases. Having Aubrey perform the narration really sealed the deal on the five star rating I gave. Love her and loved this book!!

Amazing read

I don’t think I’ve ever crushed an audiobook the day it came out before but this was so listenable and so relatable and I want to make everyone read it. The intro. The finale. The constant refrain of “don’t forget about the most marginalized among us”. I loved it.

Powerful condense read

This is the type of book that you read over and over again, it took me longer than I thought because it created so much room for reflection even on topics I thought I’d had heard lots on having read other books on Fat Bias, including her first book. It was concise and I like how it was divided, I learned so much and gained even more perspective on my own bias, even as a fat person. The last myth was surprising and very humbling, I appreciated it. Aubrey is so eloquent in explaining her ideas and as a big fan, I really enjoyed listening to this with her as a narrator. I also appreciate how she lifted other voices and gave amazing recommendations to further my knowledge with other books.

Couldn’t stop listening

Learned so much even though I have always lived in a fat body. Lots of opportunities for further reading, which I appreciate.

Everyone should read this.

Honestly everyone needs to read this book. Aubrey has done an incredible job putting together this book and includes the experiences and insights of herself and other anti-fact advocates. She presents the issues with honestly and clarity and without softening the realities for anyone’s comfort.
