昭和初期の児童文学作家である新美南吉の童話。初出は「赤い鳥」［鈴木三重吉主宰、1932（昭和7）年］。初刊は南吉の死の直後に刊行された第三童話集「花のき村と盗人たち」［帝国教育出版部、1943（昭和18）年］。小学校国語科教材として現在でも多く使用されている、代表的な作品。貧しい村人「兵十」といたずら好きの狐「ごん」とのふれあい、そして行き違いによって生まれる深い悲しみが、民話風に描かれる良作。
