田宮又左衛門の養子だったお岩は、疱瘡を患って醜女になってしまった。
病で亡くなった又左右衛門の跡目を継がせるため、又市は口車に乗せて、お岩の外見を知らない浪人の伊右衛門を、婿養子としてお岩に嫁がせた。
伊右衛門は、お岩を疎み、喜兵衛にお岩との離縁を頼む。
喜兵衛はお岩を騙し、伊右衛門とお岩との離縁に成功する。
お岩はそのことを後で知り、恨みに狂うのであった。
