代々江戸城の茶室を管理し、将軍や大名に茶の接待をする「奥坊主」と呼ばれる職を務めた家柄に育ち、文芸や芸事への興味・関心を早くから持っていた芥川龍之介。才気にあふれ、世話好きな性格は周りの人々を惹きつけ、たくさん悩みながらもよく笑い、よくしゃべる人だったそうです。そんな芥川は、東京帝国大学に入学した翌年、高校の同級だった久米正雄らと共に第三次「新思潮」を創刊し、小説や翻訳を発表しました。次いで第四次「新思潮」を創刊の際に掲載した『鼻』が夏目漱石に認められ、文壇に登ることとなりました。その後新聞社に入社し、記者としてではなく専業作家として意欲的に執筆活動を続けました。芥川は、漱石や森鴎外から文体や表現の影響を受けたり、キリシタンもの、江戸を舞台にしたものなど題材に応じて文体を変えたりと、意識的な小説の書き方をしていました。また、鈴木三重吉により創刊された児童雑誌「赤い鳥」には、初となる童話作品『蜘蛛の糸』を発表、その後も同雑誌を中心に童話作品を相次いで発表し、幅広く作品を世に残しています。千八百八十年五月何日かの日暮れ方である。二年ぶりにヤスナヤ・ポリヤナを訪れた Ivan Turgenyef は主の Tolstoi 伯爵と一しよに、ヴアロンカ川の向うの雑木林へ、山鴫を打ちに出かけて行つた。鴫打ちの一行には、この二人の翁の外にも、まだ若々しさの失せないトルストイ夫人や、犬をつれた子供たちが加はつてゐた。ヴアロンカ川へ出るまでの路は、大抵麦畑の中を通つてゐた。日没と共に生じた微風は、その麦の葉を渡りながら、静に土の匂を運んで来た。トルストイは銃を肩にしながら、誰よりも先に歩いて行つた。さうして時々後を向いては、トルストイ夫人と歩いてゐるトウルゲネフに話しかけた。その度に「父と子と」の作家は、やや驚いたやうに眼を挙げながら、嬉しさうに滑らかな返事をした。時によると又幅の広い肩を揺すつて、嗄れた笑ひ声を洩す事もあつた。それは無骨なトルストイに比べると、上品な趣があると同時に、何処か女らしい答ぶりだつた……
