昭和初期の児童文学作家である新美南吉の童話。初出・初刊は、生前計画され死後刊行された第二童話集「牛をつないだ椿の木」［大和書店、1943（昭和18）年］。「ごん狐」と同じく狐を題材としており、どちらも小学校国語科教材として広く親しまれてきた作品である。母狐が子狐に手袋を買ってやろうと考え、子狐が人間の経営する帽子屋に買いに行く話。
