大正から昭和期の作家、梶井基次郎の短編小説。初出は「詩と詩論 第二冊」［1928（昭和3）年］。「桜の樹の下には屍体が埋まっている！」。桜の花の美しさは、人間も含めた動物の死によってなりたっているのだと“俺”は考える。死によってこそ、美しさが信じられる。死に考えを巡らせることに喜びを感じる。梶井の悪鬼の憂鬱は、美しさの底を暴いてみせる。暴かれた桜は一段と美しく咲くしかあるまい。
