薫 二八歳

明けくれに昔こひしきこころもて
生くる世もはたゆめのうきはし

薫は横川の僧都を訪ね、浮舟のいきさつを詳しく知る。浮舟の生存を感慨深く受け止める薫の様子を見て、僧都は浮舟を出家させたことに自責の念を覚える。
浮舟のいる小野の家を直接訪ねることをはばかった薫は、浮舟の弟小君（こぎみ）を使いに立てて、浮舟への手紙を届けるのだった。
使いに驚いた妹尼は小君をあわれみ、浮舟に面会を促すが、浮舟はかたくなに拒み続ける。母の消息も気にかかり、薫の手紙に心を乱す浮舟であったが、ついにはものも言わず伏したままとなり、妹尼も取りなしようがない。
落胆して戻った小君の報告を聞いた薫は深く失望した。浮舟のことをいろいろ想像する薫は、誰かがひそかに恋人としてかくまっているのではないかという疑念すらわくのだった。
