私がある宗教団体で五年ばかり住み込みで働いていた頃のことだ。
ある時教会の説教所が手狭になってきたので、建増しのために五千円の寄付金を集めることになり、主任はなんと十日ばかりで寄付金を集めてきた。
だが、ある日、主任宛てに手紙が届く。
「今夜十二時の時計を合図に貴殿の手許に集っている寄附金を頂戴に推参する。御用意を願う」
イタズラだと取り合わない主任を説得して警察に届けに行くと、四五日前に戸籍を調べに来た顔見知りの巡査と出会う。巡査はそんな間抜けな泥棒がいるものかと笑うが、巡回のついでに来てくれると言う。
そして、その晩、主任と来てくれた巡査と共に私は金庫番をしていたのだが……
＜江戸川乱歩（えどがわ・らんぽ）＞
日本の推理小説家。1894年10月21日生まれ、三重県生まれ。筆名は、19世紀の米国の小説家エドガー・アラン・ポーに由来する。数々の職業遍歴を経て作家デビューを果たす。本格的な推理小説と並行して『怪人二十面相』、『少年探偵団』などの少年向けの推理小説なども多数手がける。代表作は『人間椅子』、『黒蜥蜴』、『陰獣』など。1954年には乱歩の寄付を基金として、後進の推理小説作家育成のための「江戸川乱歩賞」が創設された。
