初出は「東京朝日新聞」「大阪朝日新聞」［1907（明治40）年］。1907年、漱石は小説家として生きる決意を固め、東京帝国大学を辞職して朝日新聞社に入社した。この作品は入社後はじめての新聞連載小説。誇り高い自我を持つヒロイン藤尾は親の決めた相手ではない男と結婚しようとするが、義理の兄が道義を守らせるために画策する。誇りを傷つけられた藤尾は自殺する。藤尾に象徴される近代文明を批判した作品とされるが、「悪」としての藤尾の人気は連載当時から高く、虞美人草ドレスという商品まで現れる社会現象となった。
