大正期に活躍した「新思潮派」の作家、芥川竜之介の代表的な短編小説。初出は「赤い鳥」［鈴木三重吉主宰、1918（大正7）年］。短編集「傀儡師」［新潮社、1919（大正8）年］に収録。全３章。地獄に堕ちた男が以前蜘蛛を助けたことでお釈迦様が救済の蜘蛛の糸を男に垂らす。「赤い鳥」掲載時は鈴木の添削によるもので、全集収録時は添削前の原稿が収録された。現在も評価の高い作品。
