In The Happiness Track, Emma Seppala, the science director of the Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education at Stanford University, explains that our inability to achieve sustainable fulfillment is tied to common but outdated notions about success. We are taught that getting ahead means doing everything that's thrown at us (and then some) with razor-sharp focus and iron discipline; that success depends on our drive and talents.

Our ego, and its accompanying sense of nagging self-doubt as we work to be bigger, better, smarter, and more in control, is one affliction we all share. In Advice Not Given, Dr. Mark Epstein reveals how Buddhism and Western psychotherapy, two traditions that developed in entirely different times and places and, until recently, had nothing to do with each other, both identify the ego as the limiting factor in our well-being, and both come to the same conclusion: When we give the ego free reign, we suffer; but when it learns to let go, we are free.

At age 30, best friends Joshua Fields Millburn and Ryan Nicodemus walked away from their six-figure corporate careers, jettisoned most of their material possessions, and started focusing on what's truly important.

Description
Number one New York Times best seller.
Winner of the 2014 Living Now Book Award for Inspirational Memoir.
"An enormously smart, clear-eyed, brave-hearted, and quite personal look at the benefits of meditation." (Elizabeth Gilbert)
Nightline anchor Dan Harris embarks on an unexpected, hilarious, and deeply skeptical odyssey through the strange worlds of spirituality and self-help and discovers a way to get happier that is truly achievable.
After having a nationally televised panic attack, Dan Harris knew he had to make some changes. A lifelong nonbeliever, he found himself on a bizarre adventure involving a disgraced pastor, a mysterious self-help guru, and a gaggle of brain scientists. Eventually, Harris realized that the source of his problems was the very thing he always thought was his greatest asset: the incessant, insatiable voice in his head, which had propelled him through the ranks of a hypercompetitive business but had also led him to make the profoundly stupid decisions that provoked his on-air freak-out.
Finally, Harris stumbled upon an effective way to rein in that voice, something he always assumed to be either impossible or useless: meditation, a tool that research suggests can do everything from lower your blood pressure to essentially rewire your brain. 10% Happier takes listeners on a ride from the outer reaches of neuroscience to the inner sanctum of network news to the bizarre fringes of America’s spiritual scene and leaves them with a takeaway that could actually change their lives.

mixed feelings on this one
First half is an auto biography. Second half gets in to the meat and potatoes of mindfulness etc but, IMO, I never felt the author was genuine about the journey. Worth the free credit just hang in there until it gets relevant.

Meditation Talked About In Real Language
I picked this up in a friend's recommendation. I have ADHD and have been trying to get into meditation as a way to better regulate my overactive mind. Problem is that many of the most well regarded works on the practice discuss it from either a heavily spiritual angle (which I'm not interested in) or from a more "clinical" perspective. My friend described this book more as "learning meditation for the everyman" so I decided to give it a go.
This is definitely more memoire than I'd prefer but it does a good job of laying the groundwork for why the author felt he needed meditation and also quantifying the improvements it brought to his life. He began his experience with the practice as a super skeptic but starts to come around, eventually ending up as a huge advocate for it. And he does so in a way that's much more relatable for the average person, even if he's in a career reserved for only a select few.
I think some may find his presentation a bit grating. I did at first but eventually grew to enjoy it. The book has a lot of humour in it and though is does dive deep on it's subjects and discuss personally dark times with the author, it's presented in a comic tone that I really appreciate. He references Sam Harris in the book, who is a famous meditation advocate. I actually tried his Waking Up app and just couldn't get things to stick with me. I think applying the methods taught in this will present me with greater success.
I dislike most self-help books but this doesn't really come across as one. It's more an autobiographical journey into meditation, not explicitly telling you how to meditate, just relaying what worked for him in en engaging way. I will say that the guided meditations offered at the end are not great and you can find much better ones either on YouTube or a free app like Insight Timer.

Overall Great
This was an excellent book - great for anyone who struggles with the idea of meditation. I personally am already a big fan of meditation, so there was a lot Dan's stories that didn't resonate with me, but it was still thoroughly entertaining as well as enlightening to what goes through other people's minds when they scoff at the practice. Even for an avid meditator, this is an excellent reminder why we need to continue doing it, as well as a few great points on how to share your practice with those around you without getting dismissed or laughed out of the room.

Absolutely loved it!
I was recommended this book by my 24 year old son, who is focused on building his career. I've told him about meditation in the past but he was always concerned about "losing his edge". Dan Harris explains his super interesting path to finding some balance in his life, and finding meditation without all of the woo-woo stuff. He was a skeptic, so explored and questioned tremendously along the way. For A type personalities, high achievers and skeptics, this book is written for you. This book (and now the Ten Percent App) has been the start of meditation and mindfulness for our whole family.

The Journey is Different For Everyone
I am a mix of a practical mind with spiritual endearment. Dan's journey is certainly engaging & I enjoyed much of what he had to share. Whether I agree with it all doesn't matter, it still resonates well. It works for him & I can see it working for others, many of my own friends, who share his skepticism.
My personal favourite is his own meditation schtick. I don't think I laughed so much during a meditation before. Thank you!

Great Read. Recommend it
Took notes while reading. It was an excellent book. I wish there were a bit more details on how to mediate or begin meditation as it can seem quite daunting of a task and since it is hard to tell whether it is being fine correctly or not. Overall, has gotten me into meditation. I've got the headspace app and the 10% happier app and do it everyday. It has allowed me to get back on track quicker when I get derailed with random thoughts. I've meditated for a month now

How is this nY times best seller?
This book is for people knows nothing about medication and care about who Dan Harris is.
Nothing about what he says is what I can’t find out online already there’s not much proprietary informations he’s given but solely his own experience and journey which is also quite irrelevant.
And then there seems to be no ending? It jumped to a series of people giving meditation guidance right away? I’m so confused.
