Publisher's Summary

If you are a woman with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), you've probably known - all your life - that you're different. As girls, we learn which behaviors, thinking, learning, and working styles are preferred, which are accepted and tolerated, and which are frowned upon. These preferences are communicated in innumerable ways-from media and books to our first-grade classroom to conversations with our classmates and parents.

Over the course of a lifetime, women with ADHD learn through various channels that the way they think, work, speak, relate, and act does not match up with the preferred way of being in the world. In short, they learn that difference is bad. And, since these women know that they are different, they learn that they are bad. It's time for a change.

A Radical Guide for Women with ADHD is the first guided workbook for women with ADHD designed to break the cycle of negative self-talk and shame-based narratives that stem from the common and limiting belief that brain differences are character flaws. In this unique guide, you'll find a groundbreaking approach that blends traditional ADHD treatment with contemporary treatment methods, such as acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), to help you untangle yourself from the beliefs that have kept you from reaching your potential in life.

Excellent Resource For Managing ADHD And Thriving

Can't recommend this enough!!! Packed with meaningful guidance and proactive strategies for managing symptoms, unpacking baggage, and thriving as a person with ADHD. This book was obvious written as a *workbook* and includes occasional writing prompts and exercises. It's definitely worth it to pause the audiobook and spend a few minutes writing in a notebook when it's suggested. Those personal insights build up as you progress through the book, imprinting key concepts into memory, and making each chapter more personally relevant. Sari Solden is simply the best on the topic of women with ADHD. This book is nuanced, well-rounded, and empowering. It feels like working with an experienced ADHD coach. I'll probably listen to it a 2nd time.

I feel so connected!

I was recently diagnosed and it blows my mind that 95% of my personality is an ADHD symptom 😂 The craziest part is HOW MANY OTHER PEOPLE ARE TOO!!

If everyone read this I’d never have to hear ‘we’re all a little ADHD’ again

I think I bookmarked every 3rd paragraph to go back and review.

The book is packed with information, resources & self guided exercises to help continually finding the centre when things spiral.

I appreciate that the authors are adamant that ADHD isn’t something to be cured, fixed or buried, but focused instead on the reality of living with the challenges that come from having this Neuro-diverse brain and the hurt of a life of trying to play ‘normal’.

The authors invite women to embrace their lives & gifts by learning to understand themselves, step out of shame & into living a full life as who they really are.

The Authors address the three forms of ADHD equally as well as adding other personality traits, situational context, health factors …

This book isn’t the beginning of my education on ADHD but it’s easily one of my favourites.

I had a really hard time focusing...

...which I guess is sort of ironic. I think this might work better as a physical book. She asks you a lot of questions and I think a physical book allows for more pausing/writing time. I wasn't able to retain any information and I'm halfway through, but I might give it another shot some other time.

this book will not actually help you with your ADHD. it is just a cheesy self-help book and nothing more.

Great for those who deal with negative self-talk

This book is more about being self-empowered than a strategy book. It's just what I needed to hear after struggling my whole life and not being diagnosed until now at 38 years old. Most of the things they mentioned I've either heard from someone or I told myself. I definitely feel validated and better equipped to start advocating better for myself after having read this.

Relatable but not very helpful

From the audio sample for this book, I thought it would give more statistics and facts about ADHD. All this did was give me a little bit of comfort but not a lot of help. The authors sound genuine and I’m not trying to discredit them, it just felt less informative than I thought it would from masters and doctorate students/professionals.

Merci

No practical strategies

At first, I felt so happy to have found this book and chapter 1 was all about how our symptoms often go undiagnosed and how our culture shames us over our ADHD. Then I realized every other chapter was simply about accepting our illness. Which I did. Quite a while ago. When it came time for the practical tips on how to deal, there were...none. they said we'd figure it out on our own. duh. If I could do that I wouldn't have bought the effin book. Also absent- great data about research studies into what strategies work and which do not. this was a pat on the head and a cookie. Nothing more.

Nothing tangible

It’s another self help book instead of straight info. Wish it was less motivational vibe and more hard facts.

Great for therapists, great for clients!

this book did an amazing job of bridging the intersection between ADHD and gender-based psychology. This book focuses heavily on the impact of those two dimensions on self-image and self-esteem. It uses solid CBT frames to gently but effective nudge readers along a path of change. As the husband of a woman with ADHD this helps me be a more supportive ally. As a clinical psychologist, I found this book helpful for working with my female clients facing sexism and the impacted of ADHD. Well Done!

touching

the struggles I've had that I couldn't find words for were finally said. I was hoping to get more guidance on practical tools to use, but it wasn't really about that.

Eye opening

I went to Therapy a few years back and was given a ADD assessment test. I tested highly likely of having ADD but kind of just excepted it and went about my life. But after listening to this book I realize how much it’s actually affected me. I feel like the lightbulb has been turned on in my brain and soul and now feel like I may have the motivation to actually move to path of happy healthier life. Thank you so much

Not a book for you if you have any confidence in yourself

This was effectively a self help / self esteem book, rather than a book of practical and tactical advice I was hoping it was. If you’ve accepted that you have adhd, are at peace with it, and are looking for ways to work effectively with it, this is not the book you’re looking for. This book is more for those who haven’t yet come to terms with the fact that they have adhd. Further more, if you have any confidence in yourself or your abilities, this book will probably annoy the hell out of you.

Not What I Expected

The narration was great and there were a few stories that I related to, but I didn't start taking interest in the book until over 3/4 of the way through. I felt at times that maybe I am "too ADHD" to follow the logic here or to really absorb what they were trying to present. This book was recommended to me by another ADHD friend, who really found benefit from it, so I'm sure the experience is different for everyone. I read the description of the book, and thought I would get a more practical guide, with information about how ADHD women operate and strategy for addressing it. Near the end of the book, they did present some strategy and even clearly stated that that was not the purpose of this book, but they included some as a bonus. I realize I may not have known what the purpose of this book was, during the majority of it. It seems the focus was on mindset about one's own ADHD experience, which for some might be really helpful. I gave 4 stars because I think what's here is valuable, but I would recommend it to others with the caveat that you will not find much fact-based information here or methods for addressing the real life challenges of living with ADHD.

Essential Material

This book nailed the experience of being a woman with ADHD. I (ugly) cried several times during the first two chapters- that’s how I KNOW they were dropping major truth bombs that hit home!!! The rest of the book had me nodding my head in agreement and feeling seen and empowered. As with most things in personal growth, this book came at the perfect time for me and I am so grateful for the authors’ work.
