Story
Isabelle should be blissfully happy - she's about to win the handsome prince. Except Isabelle isn't the beautiful girl who lost the glass slipper and captured the prince's heart. She's the ugly stepsister who cut off her toes to fit into Cinderella's shoe...which is now filling with blood. Isabelle cut away pieces of herself in order to become pretty. Sweet. More like Cinderella. But that only made her mean, jealous, and hollow. Now she has a chance to alter her destiny and prove what ugly stepsisters have always known: it takes more than heartache to break a girl.

Once upon a time, a girl named Sophie rode into the forest. Her lips were as red as blood, her skin as pale as snow, and her hair as dark as night. When she stopped to rest, her huntsman companion took his knife, plunged it into Sophie’s chest...and removed her heart. Yet Sophie doesn’t die. She’s rescued by seven mysterious engineers who manage to fashion her a temporary heart.

Heralded as an instant classic of fantasy literature, Maguire has written a wonderfully imaginative retelling of The Wizard of Oz told from the Wicked Witch's point of view. More than just a fairy tale for adults, Wicked is a meditation on the nature of good and evil.

Publisher's Summary
Hidden in the Beast's library is a very mysterious book. Belle is about to discover it and visit a glittering new world. But is everything in that world what it seems? And will Belle be able to find her way home? Or will the story take hold of her - and never let her go?
Smart, bookish Belle, a captive in the Beast's castle, has become accustomed to her new home and has befriended its inhabitants. When she comes upon Nevermore, an enchanted book unlike anything else she has seen in the castle, Belle finds herself pulled into its pages and transported to a world of glamour and intrigue. The adventures Belle has always imagined, the dreams she was forced to give up when she became a prisoner, seem within reach again.
The charming and mysterious characters Belle meets within the pages of Nevermore offer her sparkling conversation, a life of dazzling Parisian luxury, and even a reunion she never thought possible. Here Belle can have everything she has ever wished for. But what about her friends in the Beast's castle? Can Belle trust her new companions inside the pages of Nevermore? Is Nevermore's world even real? Belle must uncover the truth about the book before she loses herself in it forever.

Naive Belle
The reader was wonderful. The story? Nice idea, but that all goes out the window once you realize where the writer took our beloved brilliant inteligent character Belle.
I found myself cringing every moment Belle went against her instincts and "fell into a trap". She literally had to be saved by an insect who TOLD her how to free herself. Come on!
It is so disheartening to have listened to a story that "dumbed" Belle. To be honest, it leaves a bitter taste in my mouth knowing this is going to be a story others will hear and perhaps read before they get to know her in Beauty and The Beast.

Disappointing
This book had a decent plot and would have been a good story on it’s own, but using the characters from Beauty and the Beast ruined it for me. There were contradictions to the story we know and love and Belle was extremely hard to like. In the Disney movies Belle is intelligent, kind, patient, and strong. The Belle in this book is self centered, gullible, and at times plain annoying. Most of the story revolves around her wallowing in self pity. I love Disney’s versions of Beauty and the Beast and was excited for this book, unfortunately for me it fell flat.

I wanted to punch Belle in the face!
This story is sooo good. I started it immediately after BATB. After I finished BATB..I was totally in love with Beast. So..in this story..when Belle started tripping..and bein all asshattery with Beast...I kinda wanted to punch her right smack in the face. Every time she went to Nevermore..I got PISSED. Meanwhile, they're left at the castle TRYING THEIR BEST to make her ungrateful azz happy and comfortable. Ugh..after her little performance..the ONLY reason I even wanted her to make it back..was so that the gang wouldn't die. Other than that...she coulda left her lil stubborn behind LOST IN THAT DAMN BOOK. I didn't even care. All I cared about was Beast's happiness. Oooweee..and when it looked like she was about to give Onree(sp?) the necklace Beast gave her.....Mannn..I had to get up and walk it off. I was HEATED..FORREAL. I was like "Bye, Felicia...keep yo azz in nevermore..ole ungrateful hag!"
It was a really good book. I almost forgot it was just a book. My attitude was off the charts.

Good for a younger audience
It was an interesting story, but probably best for a younger audience - it felt like a children's story. The narrator did a good job with character voices, but the rest of the narration was overly dramatic. She should remember that if every word is read in such a tense, dramatic voice - it completely loses the effect in the parts that actually are supposed to be dramatic.

Enchanting addition
I did love the story and being back in Belle's world. However, I was hoping there would be new information. I didn't realize it was going to take place within the original story. I would have liked to get fresh ideas and such. However, it was enchanting and engaging despite that.

Captivating
I got lost in this book just as much as Belle was caught up in her own story. The lines about love being the opposite of death spoke to me strongly in particular.
