About this listen
In 12 Rules for Life, acclaimed public thinker and clinical psychologist Jordan B. Peterson offered an antidote to the chaos in our lives: eternal truths applied to modern anxieties. His insights have helped millions of readers and resonated powerfully around the world.
Now in his long-awaited sequel, Peterson goes further, showing that part of life's meaning comes from reaching out into the domain beyond what we know, and adapting to an ever-transforming world. While an excess of chaos threatens us with uncertainty, an excess of order leads to a lack of curiosity and creative vitality. Beyond Order therefore calls on us to balance the two fundamental principles of reality--order and chaos--and reveals the profound meaning that can be found on the path that divides them.
In times of instability and suffering, Peterson reminds us that there are sources of strength on which we can all draw: insights borrowed from psychology, philosophy, and humanity's greatest myths and stories. Drawing on the hard-won truths of ancient wisdom, as well as deeply personal lessons from his own life and clinical practice, Peterson offers twelve new principles to guide readers towards a more courageous, truthful, and meaningful life.

Story14
Published first in 1912, Psychology of the Unconscious was one of the most important stepping stones in the development of Jung’s thought and practice. It has a long subtitle: A Study of the Transformations and Symbolisms of the Libido. A Contribution to the History of the Evolution of Thought. This expressed the underlying impetus - a break from the view of the libido and its functions as taught by Sigmund Freud, which Jung had earlier adopted. It was from this point that the two approaches, which came to be known as the Swiss and Viennese schools, emerged.

Story8
Stoicism, a school of Hellenistic thought founded in Athens in the third century BC, was one of the most sublime philosophies in the history of Western civilization. It is a way of living that focuses on reality instead of fantasy or idealism. According to its teachings, the path to peace and happiness is found in accepting the moment as it presents itself, by not allowing oneself to be ruled by the desire for pleasure or by the fear of pain.

Story168
In 1957, four years before his death, Carl Gustav Jung, psychiatrist and psychologist, began writing his life story. But what started as an exercise in autobiography soon morphed into an altogether more profound undertaking. The result is an absorbing piece of self-analysis: a frank statement of faith, philosophy, and principles from one of the great explorers of the human mind.

What the critics say
“[Jordan Peterson] is a serious person and is genuinely engaged in trying to improve the lives of his readers and patients. Much of his advice is both valuable and, occasionally, even beautiful. . . . Peterson’s call to responsibility, to depth, to seriousness, and to fidelity are welcome and powerful.” —Los Angeles Review of Books
PRAISE FOR JORDAN PETERSON
“We live in a time when so many young (and not so young) people feel lost . . . Mr. Peterson talks about the attitudes that will help find the path. It is not a politically correct or officially approved path, but it is an intensely practical and yet heightened one: This life you’re living has meaning.”
—PEGGY NOONAN, Wall Street Journal
“Jordan Peterson is universally revered—and feared—for his incredible intellect and emotional insight.”
—DAVE RUBIN, host of The Rubin Report and author of Don’t Burn This Book
“The Peterson way is a harsh way, but it is an idealistic way—and for millions of young men, it turns out to be the perfect antidote to the cocktail of coddling and accusation in which they are raised.”
—DAVID BROOKS, New York Times
“The world needs Jordan Peterson.”
—DOUGLAS MURRAY, author of The Madness of Crowds
Rule 1
We need to talk about the past to separate trivial overblown thoughts from experiences that are important
We need to talk about the present to know where we are , where are going and why we are going there. Helps regulate effiency
Institutions must exist to solve problems in order for life to continue
No one unwilling to be a beginner can learn
If the people who are best at solving a problem rise to the top, it is not power, it is authority that properly accompanies ability
Rule 2
Follow the rules, until those rules prevent you from becoming a higher ideal of those rules
““But I say to you who are willing to hear: Love your enemies. Do good to those who hate you. Bless those who curse you. Pray for those who mistreat you. If someone slaps you on the cheek, offer the other one as well. If someone takes your coat, don’t withhold your shirt either. Give to everyone who asks and don’t demand your things back from those who take them. Treat people in the same way that you want them to treat you.”
Luke 6:27-31 CEB
Only change course in career if what you’re considering seems more challenging and rewarding.
Rule 4
People get more upset by the things they didn’t do then with the errors they made while actively navigating the world
Describing hell: all of the suffering of life with none of the meaning
Voluntary confrontation with a feared hated or despised obstacle is curative. We become stronger by facing what impedes our necessary progress
Rule 5
Telling someone to not say a certain word is insensitive to people who’s family participated in the Second World War or people who come from countries where totalitarian regimes killed people in the name of equality. Furthermore telling someone to not use a certain word is to tell them to not be true to themselves. This demotivates people when they must censor their person. Instead, tell them how it makes you feel when you use those words around them and let them decide whether to take this into account. If they were truly concerned about the wellbeing of their coworkers and whether their presence energizes your spirit to work towards your common goal then they would adjust their behaviour. To issue a blanket ban on words is to show that you don’t care whether your coworkers are energized to work hard towards your common goal.
Rule 9
I was seen as an outcast in elementary and high school. I believe it was because I displayed preferable traits to teachers and this made other kids uncomfortable and unsafe so they pressured each other to not involve themselves with me. I believe this is happening again at my place of work. My abilities highlight their deficiencies. They get defensive. I am falling into past behaviour of trying to modify myself to their expectations. I shouldn’t do that because it’s not about me. I need to fully utilize my ability.
