A fantastic return to modern fantasy

I haven't read or listened to many books lately, mostly out of stress. But when I checked the audible app to see what past-me had saved for current-me, this one stood out to me.

You have five main characters with unique characteristics, back stories, accents, and trauma. While the story focuses primarily from Sal's standpoint (3rd person) you're given snippets of other perspectives that don't break the narrative at all.

I truly appreciate that while there is a romantic/sexual aspect it isn't at the forefront of the novels but more like a footnote that gives these characters depth. it doesn't detract from the main story and realistically can be more or less ignored. which, to me, is exactly what I like.

XE Sands does a fantastic job of pacing the narration. with the variety of accents and genders the story requires, they do an amazing job with continuity and keeping you immersed. I would love to listen to more of their works.

I've read Max Gladstone books in the past and enjoyed them, and this collaborative work has opened up more authors for me to look into.

now, my only issue is to find an audiobook of the following seasons...
