About this listen

Bloomsbury presents Cleopatra and Frankenstein by Coco Mellors, read by Kit Griffiths.

The smash National bestseller and Goodreads Choice Award finalist—perfect for readers of Modern Lovers and Conversations with Friends. An addictive, humorous, and poignant debut novel about the shock waves caused by one couple’s impulsive marriage.

Twenty-four-year-old British painter Cleo has escaped from England to New York and is still finding her place in the sleepless city when, a few months before her student visa ends, she meets Frank. Twenty years older and a self-made success, Frank’s life is full of all the excesses Cleo’s lacks. He offers her the chance to be happy, the freedom to paint, and the opportunity to apply for a Green Card. But their impulsive marriage irreversibly changes both their lives, and the lives of those close to them, in ways they never could’ve predicted.

Each compulsively readable chapter explores the lives of Cleo, Frank, and an unforgettable cast of their closest friends and family as they grow up and grow older. Whether it’s Cleo’s best friend struggling to embrace his gender queerness in the wake of Cleo’s marriage, or Frank’s financially dependent sister arranging sugar daddy dates to support herself after being cut off, or Cleo and Frank themselves as they discover the trials of marriage and mental illness, each character is as absorbing, and painfully relatable, as the last.

As hilarious as it is heartbreaking, entertaining as it is deeply moving, Cleopatra and Frankenstein marks the entry of a brilliant and bold new talent.©2022 Coco Mellors (P)2022 HarperCollins Publishers Limited

For those of us that appreciate character development over ostentatious plots, then this is the book. It’s so revealing and relatable, the characters seem real, and Coco gives us enough unexpected turns and grittiness to keep us enthralled. I so appreciate what this author has done. Truly beautiful work.

A deeply human story

I was expecting the book to be a lot little normal people but thing that was similar was that people had accents. I did not like frank.

Not very Sally Rooney

I absolutely loved this book. The narration is fantastic with the various voices and characters. The mix of dark and light was fascinating to me - troubled characters with mental health struggles, addiction, etc. but also with honest sarcasm, wit and observational humour that I really enjoy. Coco Mellors is becoming one of my favourite authors.

Incredible story

What a fascinating story. I adored this, and I finished it in about one day. 10/10.

A tender pleasure

I wanted to like it! Seemed pretty good at the beginning then went all down hill from there. So overly dramatic. I'm not sure if the intention was to make us hate the characters but I did. Everyone is soooo "eccentric"...

For some reason it was highly rated so I imagine it might be quite popular. If you do decide to read this despite my review and want to have a little fun, then I recommend creating some sort of drinking game everytime the author uses the simile "like a silk dress".
