One afternoon - after another failed attempt to get motivated to exercise - I (accidentally) started my first mini habit. I initially committed to do one push-up, and it turned into a full workout. I was shocked. This "stupid idea" wasn't supposed to work. I was shocked again when my success with this strategy continued for months (and to this day). I had to consider that maybe I wasn't the problem in those 10 years of mediocre results. Maybe it was my prior strategies that were ineffective, despite being oft-repeated as "the way to change" in countless books.

There are stacks upon stacks of self-help books that will promise you love, happiness, and a fabulous life. But how can you pinpoint the exact behaviors that cause you to be miserable in the first place? Sometimes when we're depressed, or just sad or unhappy, our instincts tell us to do the opposite of what we should - such as focusing on the negative, dwelling on what we can't change, isolating ourselves from friends and loved ones, eating junk food, or overindulging in alcohol. Sound familiar?

Not A Good Use Of Time
Unfortunately this book did not actually provide meaningful how-to steps for improving people skills. If you want lengthy additions to your to-do lists, or if you've never thought about how you interact with people before, maybe this book is for you. If you want to improve on the moderately successful interactions you're actually enjoying, look elsewhere. Here's an example of a hypothesis (from elsewhere!) that leads to how-to steps to improvement: social intelligence/emotional intelligence consists of two skills: mindsight (perceiving what another person is feeling or deems important) and self-regulation. To improve mindsight, try books on body language, negotiation, or motivational interviewing. To improve self-regulation, try books on self-compassion, mindfulness, or rationality as contrasted with intelligence. I acknowledge I did not finish this audiobook.

Nobody’s against the virtues
I returned that book (read 1/4 of it). As the title of this review says, nobody’s against virtues ...
I found the book’s idea too much dispersed. There were so many concepts. I felt the author gave me 6 to 8 concepts to applied per minutes like someone was reading me a grocery list ... all the components of the list made sense ... but I guess that I struggled with the “listing” kind of approach.

Wasn’t sure at first but ended up loving it
As i said in my headline, I wasn’t sure at first. I was a little diubious simply as I have tried similar books to this and i thought it might be the same thing again - but, by the time i got to the end, I am happy to say I was proven wrong! This is a very different book. Practical, easy to follow and valuable. I found it very very motivating which is what I needed.
