January 1937. Jack Miller has just about run out of options. His shoes have worn through, he can't afford to heat his rented room in Tooting, and he longs to use his training as a specialist wireless operator instead of working in his dead-end job. When he is given the chance to join an arctic expedition, as communications expert, by a group of elite Oxbridge graduates, he brushes off his apprehensions and convinces himself to join them.

As the young men set sail from a gloomy Britain on the verge of war, Jack feels the overwhelming excitement of not knowing what lies ahead. Little can he imagine the horrors that await him in their destination, Gruhuken, a place that cannot escape the savage echo of its past.

OK story not scary

I was expecting a really good story that would send chills down my back after reading some reviews and reccomendations but I did not find the story scary, or particularly interesting. My mind kept wandering and I had to keep repeating parts as I lost focus, which is unusual for me. It felt like it could have been a great short story but felt unnecessarily drawn out to me.

Terrifying, Harrowing and Utterly Beautiful.

story in form of extended monologue. The narrator is topnotch. Loved that the author came definitively down on the side of whether there really was a ghost - or not. Wonderful period detail. Absolutely worth listening to.

Fantastic Slow-Burn

Terrifying slow burning story with a powerful atmosphere.
My only thought is that the protagonist could have have explored compassion or understanding towards the haunting a bit more. I felt things that never seemed to occur to the character and was a bit frustrated.

Confronting and scary as hell

I loved all of it, the story caught me up and left me wondering what that kind of darkness would feel like. Very scary!!!

Disturbingly scary

Wow. I don’t think I’ll ever go up North to artic after reading this. Makes you feel totally isolated, alone. Amazing scenery and highly disturbing material. Good mix of love in here. If you like dogs this is a good book for you

Haunting

Great story, you really got a sense of the isolation and loneliness. Narrator was fantastic.

Good pace, good narration, good story.

I actually really enjoyed this story. It wasn't overly long the pace was good and the narrator did a fantastic job. My only issue would be that I personally did not find it scary. Not to say that it might not scare others, but for me, it wasn't scary.
I will listen to it at least once more because I did like it.

Amazing!

This book was wonderfully written and fired the imagination with dark terrors.
The narrator did a marvelous job and was a pleasure to listen to; Mr. Northam brought Jack's character and emotions to life.
Im looking forward to reading/listening to more from this author.

Excellent melodrama.

Although the author skims over the ghostly aspects of this story, she does produce an excellent melodrama that captures the desolation, isolation, desperation of a man alone in the cold, dark arctic. So, even though this is not a particularly scary ghost story as suggested in the description, it is hauntingly eerie and fascinating. Michelle Paver is an excellent writer and Jeremy Northam is her equal as a narrator.
