Friedrich Hölderlin schrieb an dem Trauerspiel "Der Tod des Empedokles" noch während seiner Arbeit am "Hyperion" (1798-1800). Er hat das Drama nicht vollendet, überliefert sind Fragmente von drei Fassungen. Er ist von Empedokles, dem Philosophen, Arzt, Dichter-Seher und Politiker (5. Jh.v.Chr.) fasziniert und sucht nach der Motivation für dessen legendären Freitod.
