Publisher's Summary

In this easy-to-listen-to, science-based book, parents, caregivers, and adults of all kinds discover how discipline affects children’s development, why intervention should reinforce connection not separation, and why the disciplinary strategies that may have been used on us as children are not the ones that children really need. As a practicing child and family psychologist and advisor to the British Columbia ministry of children and families, Dr. Vanessa has seen it all, and she has navigated hundreds of tough situations with families. Drawing on scientific research and a wealth of clinical experience, she shows you how to put out the fire without dampening your child’s spirits; how to correct their behavior while emphasizing connection; and how to discipline without damage.

Very insightful

Loved it, i prefer the authors narration and pace on live feeds. More lively tone. Still very useful.

Good info poor delivery

I have to agree with the other reviews, the voice actress reading this book is comically bad. While the information provided is good the audible book is a struggle to listen too. You will be much better off just getting Whole brain child, same information but the book goes deeper and provides more for the parent to help and implement with their child.

Some important info, but irritating delivery

I bought this both as a paperback and as an audio book, because while trying to read the paperback I kept falling asleep.

However, the first bit of the book was not something I could sleep through... if *my child* punched me in the nose they would instantly know it was a problem because I'd be gushing blood everywhere. Not to mention it makes me worried that kids raised this way may grow up thinking people will just let them abuse them. Majorly problematic, if so.

The author repeats herself so much that I began to wonder if this book should just have been 1 or 2 blog posts rather than a book. At the end, she actually mentions it was initially a blog post.
She shares some important concepts and methods, though I don't agree with everything. And I generally didn't like the *way* she shared them. I do hope people who need to hear them will still get them from somewhere, whether it's this book or somewhere else.

I find the narrator's clipped way of speaking and sorry, but, her accent mind-numbingly annoying. She also mispronounces words and puts emphasis on the wrong parts of phrases and sentences so that they don't actually make sense anymore. That made it hard to follow, in addition to irritating.

I absolutely loved this book. So many key insights, my only regret is that I didn't read this when my kids were younger. Highly recommend!

compassionate and clear guidance

The text shares relatable examples and explains how to provides steady, caring support so our children can regulate themselves well. Some parenting texts are patronizing but the tone here is optimistic. I am on my second listen and am sure I'll return to it in the future.

Amazing insights!

Loved the information in this book so much, it's definitely a book to listen to multiple times. Maybe even multiple times a year as your raising little ones. It's so important to have this understanding. Highly recommend this to any parent.

Provides the heart in parenting advice

Provides the heart in parenting advice! This book did a great job of helping me to focus on the relationship with my child. Parenting out of being and connecting with my kid rather than trying to control the behavior of my kid.
I loved her examples and steps that are very practical. From the very beginning of reading this book, you are inspired to be the best big person you can be in your kid's life. And you can do it!
