Terrible Book!!

What disappointed you about Dominican Republic - Culture Smart!?

I was expecting a travel guide type of book. This book sounds like it was written by a not-for-profit member who was imposing her political views of the country on the reader.

Has Dominican Republic - Culture Smart! turned you off from other books in this genre?

Yes!!

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The narrator did a terrible job pronouncing some words. It took me a while to understand the word "machismo." This word was mangled!!

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

I found this book to be very racist in its portrayal of the Dominican people. Furthermore, it got a number of facts wrong. Baseball was introduced to the DR by Cubans and not by Americans. Salsa is NOT as popular in the DR as the authors claim. First on that list should be merengue and bachata. But some people think that all of Latin America follows salsa the same. Also, young Dominicans listen to electronic/techno music and dembow more than reggaeton. Reggaeton is from Puerto Rico and more popular there.

Any additional comments?

I DO NOT recommend this book!! Don't waste your time and money. It is more about the authors' negative political views rather than being a guide to a foreigner wishing to travel to the DR.
