El Hombre de Arena (Der Sandmann) es el cuento más célebre de E.T.A. Hoffmann. Publicado en 1817 en sus Cuentos nocturnos (Nachtstücke), es el cuento más representativo del máximo autor del género del romanticismo negro (Schwarze Romantik, conocido también como literatura del terror gótico) durante el siglo XIX. El cuento relata la vida de un muchacho llamado, Nathanaël, quien está traumatizado por la muerte de su padre, que murió en muy extrañas circunstancias, ocurrida durante su infancia. y el unico sospechoso de la muerte de su padre es el abogado Coppelius.
A pesar de estar comprometido con Clara, durante su estancia en la Universidad G, se enamora de un autómata llamada Olimpia construida por el desaparecido abogado Coppelius y su cómplice Spalanzani. Nathanael cree que éste autómata es un ser humano real. El descubrimiento del engaño, y la relación de Coppelius con la creación del autómata lo lleva a la total locura, y lo lleva a su propia muerte. Sigmund Freud, hace un análisis sobre este cuento, (El hombre de arena), en su estudio de “Lo siniestro”.Él manifiesta que lo ordinario o común se torna siniestro cuando lo elemental se hace extraño.
