Story
Michael J. Sullivan garnered critical raves and a massive readership for his Riyria Revelations series. The first book in his highly anticipated Riyria Chronicles series of prequels, The Crown Tower brings together warrior Hadrian Blackwater with thieving assassin Royce Melborn. The two form a less-than-friendly pairing, but the quest before them has a rare prize indeed, and if they can breach the supposedly impregnable walls of the Crown Tower, their names will be legend.

Story
The ancient magic of wizards was anything but dark. It was the enlightenment that lifted humanity from the squalor of superstition, and the worship of fell spirits and capricious gods, but those days are gone. The shining glory of the sorcerers burned away the subtlety of wisdom, replacing it with easy power, held only in the hands of the elite - a new age built upon the elemental supremacy of aristocrats and the ignorance of the masses.

Story
For dinosaurs, it was a big rock. For humans: Coronal Mass Ejection (CME). When the Earth is hit by the greatest CME in recorded history (several times larger than the Carrington Event of 1859), the combined societies of the planet's most developed nations struggle to adapt to a life thrust back into the Dark Ages. In the United States, the military scrambles to speed the nation's recovery on multiple fronts including putting down riots, establishing relief camps, delivering medical aid, and bringing communication and travel back on line. Just as a real foothold is established in retaking the skies (utilizing existing commercial aircraft supplemented by military resources and ground control systems), a mysterious virus takes hold of the population, spreading globally over the very flight routes that the survivors fought so hard to rebuild.

Publisher's Summary
One of the genre's favorite pairs returns in a classic fantasy short for both Riyria veterans and first-time readers.
Several years have passed since the war-weary mercenary Hadrian and cynical ex-assassin Royce joined forces to start their thieves-for-hire organization better known as Riyria. Things have gone well enough for the team as they do "jobs" for various nobles throughout Elan. Usually that means stealing something, but when a young heiress asks them to steal her…well, that's a first for the pair. All is not as it seems, but Royce is determined to get the bottom of what's actually going on. After all, he has his professional integrity at stake.
Originally released in the Blackguards anthology published by Ragnarok Publications, this is a standalone short story of 10,800 words. No prior knowledge of The Riyria Revelations is required to enjoy it to its fullest, making this a perfect introduction for new readers or a chance for existing fans to spend a little more time with old friends.

An interesting short story
I have read two stories with these characters and I have enjoyed both of them. The author does a good job of developing the characters in such a short timeframe. One thing I really liked was that I found out different background info in each of the stories. Sometimes I read novellas and backstory pieces and they all contain the same "new" information. These stories did not. I really liked that.

Fun Mystery, Detective Story with a bit of Fantasy
The story hooks the reader in pretty fast with the protagonist receiving a request from a young woman to kidnap her so that she can finally be noticed and "saved" by her "dashing prince."
The twist is that she's kept in a metal box by her father on the nights whenever this dashing man visits. So while initially reluctant, the 2 main characters decide to accept mostly to see what the heck is going on. And things just get stranger and stranger. This short story has twist after surprising twist.
Each turn in the plot is a little more fantastic and yet still believable, and the way that everything turns out and the end is a little ironic but also grounded and satisfying for the reader.
So for me this is Not a recommendation of "get it because it's free," but rather get it because it's actually pretty good.

WEREWOLF?
Michael J. Sullivan has yet to disappoint me. This is my sixth book or short story by him and I could recommend them all. His writing is smooth, intelligent and witty. Most of his work is considered fantasy, but you don't have to be a fantasy fan to enjoy his work. This story is a kind of Halloween mystery. If you are already a fan, don't miss this one. If for some reason you have never read Sullivan, get this while it is free. This is a gem.
Reynolds is a top tier narrator.

Another Awesome Riyria Story!
I love ALL the Riyria stories and Royce and Hadrian are my all time two favorite "fantasy" characters. I love the dry humor and situations they find themselves in. Even though this was a short story, it had a great plot and interesting characters.
I was so excited to learn there will be another Riyria Chronicles story coming out later this year! Woo-Hoo!
Michael Sullivan, thank you so much for releasing this book for free; it was awesome.
