FREE: Professional Integrity (A Riyria Chronicles Tale)

Written by: Michael J. Sullivan
Narrated by: Tim Gerard Reynolds

Publisher's Summary

One of the genre's favorite pairs returns in a classic fantasy short for both Riyria veterans and first-time readers.

Several years have passed since the war-weary mercenary Hadrian and cynical ex-assassin Royce joined forces to start their thieves-for-hire organization better known as Riyria. Things have gone well enough for the team as they do "jobs" for various nobles throughout Elan. Usually that means stealing something, but when a young heiress asks them to steal her…well, that's a first for the pair. All is not as it seems, but Royce is determined to get the bottom of what's actually going on. After all, he has his professional integrity at stake.

Originally released in the Blackguards anthology published by Ragnarok Publications, this is a standalone short story of 10,800 words. No prior knowledge of The Riyria Revelations is required to enjoy it to its fullest, making this a perfect introduction for new readers or a chance for existing fans to spend a little more time with old friends.

An interesting short story

I have read two stories with these characters and I have enjoyed both of them. The author does a good job of developing the characters in such a short timeframe. One thing I really liked was that I found out different background info in each of the stories. Sometimes I read novellas and backstory pieces and they all contain the same "new" information. These stories did not. I really liked that.

Fun Mystery, Detective Story with a bit of Fantasy

The story hooks the reader in pretty fast with the protagonist receiving a request from a young woman to kidnap her so that she can finally be noticed and "saved" by her "dashing prince."

The twist is that she's kept in a metal box by her father on the nights whenever this dashing man visits. So while initially reluctant, the 2 main characters decide to accept mostly to see what the heck is going on. And things just get stranger and stranger. This short story has twist after surprising twist.

Each turn in the plot is a little more fantastic and yet still believable, and the way that everything turns out and the end is a little ironic but also grounded and satisfying for the reader.

So for me this is Not a recommendation of "get it because it's free," but rather get it because it's actually pretty good.

Fun short story

Stand alone story. Good read (listen). Tim G R is wonderful as always. Nice that it was a free download but the quality is just as good as the longer stories.

Short Story draw in

This short story performed its function of making me want to read the series it sprang from. Nefarious frenemies, naive and sweet airheads, protective and doting Daddy and thieves with a conscience. Oh, and a werewolf........sort of. Recommend

THANKS FOR THE FREE SHORTY

This free short story by Michael J Sullivan is a wonderful addition to the
Riyria collection. This is a short and complete Riyria story, and is a good
introduction to the collection .

WEREWOLF?

Michael J. Sullivan has yet to disappoint me. This is my sixth book or short story by him and I could recommend them all. His writing is smooth, intelligent and witty. Most of his work is considered fantasy, but you don't have to be a fantasy fan to enjoy his work. This story is a kind of Halloween mystery. If you are already a fan, don't miss this one. If for some reason you have never read Sullivan, get this while it is free. This is a gem.

Reynolds is a top tier narrator.

Thank you, Michael, for this free story!

Great visit to the world of Royce and Hadrian, in their typical characters, and in a story with several twists and turns. If only we could get a fix of them every month! Tim Reynolds is the only one who should ever read this series as he is perfect!

great intro to the Riyria world

This is the first story of Michael J Sullivan's that I heard/read. It's a great story with some great characters. Loved it enough that I got one of his books. Worth the time if you like fantasy.

Marvelous.

A fun, lighthearted story - lighthearted for Royce and Hadrian, anyway.
It makes me want to read the trilogy again.

Wonderful, well read story. Witty and with twists.

Michael J Sullivan at his best story telling. Hadrian and Royce are fantastic diverse character you can't help but love. I just love the witty exchanges between the pair and their mannerisms.

Tim really brought the story to life the way he rad it.

Mediocre addition to the books.

Not bad for a free audio production by Michael J Sullivan, but not as brilliant as the series.

Another Awesome Riyria Story!

I love ALL the Riyria stories and Royce and Hadrian are my all time two favorite "fantasy" characters. I love the dry humor and situations they find themselves in. Even though this was a short story, it had a great plot and interesting characters.

I was so excited to learn there will be another Riyria Chronicles story coming out later this year! Woo-Hoo!

Michael Sullivan, thank you so much for releasing this book for free; it was awesome.

Awesome title

This is quite different to any book I would have expected but still has his own brand of logic and pragmatism that I enjoyed.
