Description

The hero of The Poet and The Scarecrow is back in this thriller from number one New York Times best-selling author Michael Connelly. Jack McEvoy, the journalist who never backs down, tracks a serial killer who has been operating completely under the radar - until now.

Veteran reporter Jack McEvoy has taken down killers before, but when a woman he had a one-night stand with is murdered in a particularly brutal way, McEvoy realizes he might be facing a criminal mind unlike any he's ever encountered.

Jack investigates - against the warnings of the police and his own editor - and makes a shocking discovery that connects the crime to other mysterious deaths across the country. Undetected by law enforcement, a vicious killer has been hunting women, using genetic data to select and stalk his targets.

Uncovering the murkiest corners of the dark web, Jack races to find and protect the last source who can lead him to his quarry. But the killer has already chosen his next target, and he's ready to strike.

Terrifying and unputdownable, Fair Warning shows once again why "Michael Connelly has earned his place in the pantheon of great crime fiction writers" (Chicago Sun-Times).

Ce que les critiques en disent

"There is no better news than a new book from the great Michael Connelly...Fair Warning brings back reporter Jack McEvoy, a character I always liked every bit as Harry Bosch or Mickey Haller or Renee Ballard...Connelly [is] at the very top of his game." (Mike Lupica, New York Daily News)

"Connelly is in terrific form here, applying genre conventions to the real-life dangers inherent in the commercial marketing of genetics research." (Marilyn Stasio, New York Times Book Review)

"A truly terrifying thriller...[Jack McEvoy] has appeared in only two previous novels, but they are two of Connelly's best: The Poet and The Scarecrow. McEvoy makes it three for three with this riveting tale." (Bill Ott, Booklist starred review)

Bit more than a page turner.

Connelly almost at his best here, finding a way to make essentially mundane investigative work interesting. There is more substance here than most novels in the genre and the writing is perfect for it. Doesn’t rely on silly twists but still manages to surprise.

Amateurish for a Connelly Novel

The scenario that Michael Connelly develops (a serial killer using a Genetics database to select his victims) is backed up with excellent background research and cleverly incorporates plausible twists & turns. The pursuit of the killer is well-plotted and delivered with Connelly's signature unparalleled pacing.. ending with an exciting, violent climax. This book is undeniably a 'Jack McEvoy' offering - but compared to other of the novels, the delivery is somewhat subpar.
I admit that I can't quite put my finger on it, but the book somehow lacks the author's characteristic screenplay-like "cinematic" style.

Contributing to the awkward feel of 'Fair Warning' is capable but unspectacular narration from Peter Giles (reading ambitious reporter 'Jack') and Zach Villa (reading coldblooded killer 'The Shrike'). Both readers exhibit exemplary diction, timbre, cadence, and tone - backed up by creditable technical support from Hachette Audio engineers (including voice-disguising modulation at one point, for example) - but the voice-acting is a little bit stereotypical, accent attempts are occasionally pretty bad, and the tone is a bit overdramatic.

Altogether, this is an entertaining mystery-thriller that rates 8 stars out of 10. You absolutely should give it a listen - just don't expect to be blown away.

Amazing!!!

I have loved the other Jack McEvoy books and this one was just as good. Great characters, fast paced plot and great narration.

You have turned a non fiction lover

Compellingly and almost believable. With the DNA and the truth surrounding the non governance of that truly laid bare our vulnerability. Throw in a believable love story and the flawed character of the protagonist I was caught and landed.

Great story

This was a very exciting and yet troubling storyline. Having been a person who submitted my DNA to an ancestry site, the reality of what may happen to your private information is quite disconcerting. Overall, I did enjoy the story.
The only problem was with Peter Giles’s narration of Jack’s voice. It was very monotonous and I found myself drifting especially when too many facts were being listed. Luckily the action would kick in and my interest as back.
