Publisher's Summary
Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the only president elected to four terms, expanded presidential powers in a fashion unparalleled in American history. He launched the New Deal; fought off constitutional attacks of his bold legislation by proposing to pack the Supreme Court; greatly expanded the president’s powers in foreign affairs; sent Japanese Americans to relocation camps after the bombing at Pearl Harbor; and seized an airplane manufacturing plant as part of his “emergency” powers. While FDR guided America out of the Great Depression and navigated a dangerous world war, he demonstrated that even great leaders can become blinded by success and unchecked power, particularly during times of war and hysteria.
