Publisher's Summary

Roland Merullo, bestselling author of Once Night Falls, returns with a galvanizing historical novel of Nazi-occupied Naples and the rage and resistance of a people under siege.

Italy, 1943. The Nazi occupation has cemented its grip on the devastated city of Naples.

Giuseppe DiPietra, a curator in the National Archives, has a subversive plan to aid the Allies. If he’s discovered, forced labor or swift execution. Lucia Pastone, secretary for the Italian Fascist government, is risking her own life in secret defiance of orders. And Lucia’s father, Aldo, is a black marketeer who draws Giuseppe and Lucia into the underworld - for their protection and to help plant the seeds of resistance. Their fates are soon intertwined with those of Aldo’s devoted lover and a boy of the streets who’ll do anything to live another day. And all of Naples is about to join forces to overcome impossible odds and repel the Nazi occupiers.

Inspired by a true historic uprising, From These Broken Streets is a richly layered novel of the extraordinary daring of ordinary people whose bonds of love, family, and unfaltering courage could not be broken.

I’ve been to Naples and never knew any of this

What brave stalwart people were a lot of the Neapolitans. Fighting to the death for their city. This author is excellent in weaving in love stories and human interest stories into the vicious war. I loved and respected a lot of his characters and despised some. The horrible German perverted head of nazis in Naples, if it was non fiction. I would love to find out his fate I recommend this book to ww2 lovers and would like to read more by this author

Amazing

I am a descendant of the heroic men and women of Naples during this time. This book has made me more proud to be Italian and I am so incredibly proud of my family's courage in Naples and the surrounding areas. That' such evil should have had its time on Earth will always astounds me; however, to know that there were courageous men and women throughout the world at that time who did their best to extinguish its ugly head gives me great hope. To my family then and now in Naples ti amp.

Bravery and courage. . .

Are presented with great pride and patriotism. I found the audible difficult to follow at times because the narrator does not change the voices, and I rely heavily on audio without written word. I also prefer First person narration, but I understand that a third person may have been necessary because of its historical content, but the overlapping of third person omniscient to third person not quite Omni present was sometimes distracting.

A very interesting story

Being of Italian decent, though not Neapolitan, I enjoyed this book very much. Mr. Di Loreto is an excellent narrator and I loved hearing his Italian. I also liked the character portrayals but found the story slightly lacking in depth. I would have liked a bit more history and a conclusion to some of the characters. I would recommend this book with reservation.

Naples fights for its Survival in WW II

I never knew the story of the people of beautiful Naples, occupied by Nazi forces and facing a grim future after fascist dictator Mussolini falls and chaos threatens the Bay of Naples area. Allied forces are poised to enter the city to liberate it. The German occupiers threaten to leave the area a rubble, depopulate the city of combat age Italian men, inflict atrocities on the civilians and deport the Jews living there. This story focuses on ordinary men and women acting together to form an underground of resistance in order to ensure their own survival. I'm a Kindle Unlimited member and had access to this book thru ebook and audio book versions. The male audio book reader was very good.
