Publisher's Summary

From the New York Times bestselling author of Pieces of Her comes an electrifying thriller featuring newly minted US Marshall Andrea Oliver as she investigates a cold case with links to her father’s past.

A small town hides a big secret.

Who killed Emily Vaughn?

A girl with a secret. Longbill Beach, 1982. Emily Vaughn gets ready for the prom. For an athlete, who is smart, pretty and well-liked, this night that should be the highlight of her high school career. But Emily has a secret. And by the end of the evening, that secret will be silenced forever.

An unsolved murder.

Forty years later, Emily’s murder remains a mystery. Her tight-knit group of friends closed ranks; her respected, wealthy family retreated inwards; the small town moved on from her grisly attack. But all that’s about to change.

One final chance to uncover a killer.

US Marshal Andrea Oliver arrives in Longbill Beach on her first assignment: to protect a judge receiving death threats. But, in reality, Andrea is there to find justice for Emily. The killer is still out there—and Andrea must discover the truth before she gets silenced, too.

I’ve read/heard this storyline a million times…

I could not wait to be finished this book. I bought the paperback based on the great reviews, but found it so boring that I realized there was no way I could actually “read” this book at typical speed, so I turned to Audible and listened to it at 1.5 to 2 x speed. Even at double speed I was dying for this book to be over, but I have a personal rule to always finish a book I start. This book was so stupid and dull and all I wanted to know was who had raped Emily and killed her. That’s literally all I cared about and it took waaaaay too long to get there. It was a very unsatisfying ending as well. I don’t know why this author has such a huge following as I find her to be such an average writer. This was a 2.5 for me, but I’m rounding it down to 2 because I actually quite detested this. (I generally dislike detective stories in general I must mention, because I find them to be quite formulaic with the same cast of characters etc.)

Too much of the "F" word

I was very disappointed at how often the "F" word was used. Was that really necessary?? Could have been a good book otherwise. Couldn't finish the book : (

Loved it

This book had it all. Very intelligently written. I didn’t know who did it until the end. Wish there was a sequel.

Pretty Good Book.

I really like Karin Slaughter and I love the narrator, Kathleen Early. Her voice is very easy to listen to and she reads with natural enthusiasm. So much so, that I look for books read by her. She brings the stories to life. This book was pretty good. I liked that it was a prequel to Pieces of Her. I thought I had it figured out and then was surprised by ending. Would recommend for easy listening and it keeps your attention.

Great Book - amazing narration

Karin is one of my favourite authors. Just when you think you’ve figured it out - curveball!

Kathleen Early brings these books to life like no other. 10/10

Great continuation of Andrea’s story

Pieces of Her had me invested in Andrea’s story. I was excited to have this book to jump into right away and continue her story. I look forward to future books in this series and the continued development of the main characters.

Loved It

I read pieces of Her and really enjoyed it so I looked for another of Karin’s books and came up with this one. Perfect! Little did I know it was a sequel. I enjoyed this book even more. It has it all. Action, mystery, intrigue and exceptionally well developed characters. My only negative comment is that if the main character bit her lip so hard that it bled that often, she would likely need medical attention. Other than that, I loved the book. And the narrator was simply perfect.

Previously seen in Pieces of Her…

… and is now a full fledged US Marshal. Andrea Oliver goes to Longbill Beach to protect a Federal Judge who is receiving death threats. Andrea however has an alternative agenda. She is also investigating the murder of the judge’s daughter (Emily Vaughn) from 40 years ago.
Emily was kind, intelligent and thought she had a great group of friends. As a 17 year old young woman she went to a party with a group of her friends. Unfortunately for her not everyone there was a friend. Someone slipped her a drug, or maybe it was the tab of acid one of the boys in her clique gave her. Either way she has almost no memory of the events that followed. A few missed periods later she finds out that she is pregnant. Emily had been a virgin. She can’t believe it could have been a friend and her only suspect is a local teacher that everyone seems to want to protect. Emily soon becomes the local pariah. I guess in 1984 in small towns this may still have been considered taboo.
Andrea has connections to the case but is keeping them under wraps and is doing this second investigation on her own.
Andrea discovers the retired teacher now running a fava bean farm. His workers are all volunteer, anorexic looking young women. When one is found after a supposed suicide it puts Andrea in direct contact with him.
I could go on and on but I think I’ve said enough without revealing too much.
Kathleen Early does a sensational job narrating.
This book has my HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION.

Good book but why so political

Good book slightly predictable. Why feel the need to make it political I almost stopped listening I like the police and think Ronald Reagan was one of the best presidents this country has every had. You cut off at least half of your readers by taking jabs at the Republican Party.

Again With The Politics....

I enjoyed the book. Narrator was great. Why with the politics? We get it, Karin, you hate Republicans. Why must you put it in your books? Is it worth losing people who have read, and would continue to read your books? I don't want any politics shoved down my throat when reading! Leave it out or risk losing loyal fans!

Captivating! One of Slaughter's best!

Girl, Forgotten is a "can't put it down" gem from start to finish! Karin Slaughter is absolutely brilliant at humanizing her characters — and Kathleen Early brings them to life through her narration. I highly recommend this book / audiobook for any fan of the genre!

I applaud Slaughter for not shying away from the reality and rawness of violent crime. This book is no exception and, as per usual for Slaughter, it depicts sexual, physical, and emotional violence (as well as other triggering topics, e.g., anorexia) with honesty. That said, I didn't find Girl, Forgotten to be as graphic or — what some may consider — "disturbing" as some of her other novels/books.

On a much lighter note... I'm a big fan of the "F-word", which made the main characters all the more F'ing endearing.

unlistenable drivel

Unless you are a Hillary Clinton liberal, it will be hard to get past the unnecessary slams against president Reagan, and against any conservative viewpoint. the story itself is impossible to follow, no real plot and contrived conversations between poorly developed characters. I'm only thru about 5 chapters and will be asking for a refund. it's a hot mess.

Overly violent

Story was drawn out way too long. Violence was intense.
Domestic violence was over done. Mystery was good but really could have been the same without so much arm twisting and hitting.

I hated every single thing about this audiobook

I listened to 8hrs of this book before I finally quit. There's not a single nuanced character in this book. Just good & bad people. I get that misogyny was pretty prevalent during the time, but this whole book so far can essentially be boiled down to trauma p*rn. It's WAY too over the top. Every woman, with the exception of Emily's mother is punished for existing. The small attempts of having some levity when it comes to Andrea & Mike fail terribly and everything takes forever for this author to get through. I really cannot stress how much I hated this book. Narrator was good, that's all I can say.

Wow! What a ride!

I’ve been a fan of Karin Slaughter for over a decade. Her writing grips me like no other. It’s like you’re there witnessing every scene with her rich descriptions.

While this is a sequel to Pieces of Her, it could easily be read as a standalone. I liked this book way more than Pieces of Her which I never fully connected with like her other books.

Bravo! Highly highly recommended.

disappointment

I have read everything Karin Slaughter has written and so I was very excited to read this book. I was extremely disappointed. Very boring. I found the characters unlikable and the plot seemed a desperate attempt at a follow up to a so-so read. I guess I was just hoping for another “Pretty Girls” which this wasn’t.
