About this listen

Nothing interferes with Shane Hollander's game - definitely not the sexy rival he loves to hate.

Pro hockey star Shane Hollander isn't just crazy talented, he's got a spotless reputation. Hockey is his life. Now that he's captain of the Montreal Voyageurs, he won't let anything jeopardize that, especially the sexy Russian whose hard body keeps him awake at night.

Boston Bears captain Ilya Rozanov is everything Shane's not. The self-proclaimed king of the ice, he's as cocky as he is talented. No one can beat him - except Shane. They've made a career on their legendary rivalry, but when the skates come off, the heat between them is undeniable. When Ilya realizes he wants more than a few secret hookups, he knows he must walk away. The risk is too great.

As their attraction intensifies, they struggle to keep their relationship out of the public eye. If the truth comes out, it could ruin them both. But when their need for each other rivals their ambition on the ice, secrecy is no longer an option...

As a cis hetero female, this story made me question my sexuality while also being so empowered by the love and list between the characters! I give this story 10 boners out of 10

Magical hot queer joy

I love all of Rachel Reid's hockey novels. the characters, the stories... amazing!
As a Canadian, I found the narrator's mispronunciations of Canadian placenames jarred me out of the flow of the story, especially "Regina"! I would think the name of a city would be easy to research..... :( Saskatchewan I can forgive, even Canadian's have trouble getting it correct. I thought the Russian accent was just "okay".

Great story - a few niggles with narration

The TV show brought me here, this is the first romance I've ever read and I am thrilled with this book. The story was excellent. The performance was a mixed bag, with some very rough accents (Shane's Canadian parents have southern accents?? Rose has the most annoying voice of anything I've ever heard in my entire life and it's only the writing that makes her tolerable AT ALL! I fear for anyone who actually speaks Russian) and sadly the very first word is a mispronounced "Regina". That said, PERSEVERE!! When the reader is not trying so hard to "do voices", it's totally decent narration to listen to and TBH there were some bonkers line reads that actually made it extremely funny and I learned that I talk back to romance audiobooks the way some people talk to characters on screen in movie theatres. The screams I scrumpt were rarely related to spice level and 99% related to adorable behaviour and endearing earnestness and trust me, I was hollering. No spoilers but I did scream out to my empty apartment "be best friends!!!!" very shortly before some best friendships were forged and it was one of the most satisfying moments of my career as a reader. The sex scenes are definitely very sexy and fully embrace queer joy in a sexual experience which was such a delight. As of this review, TV episodes 1-3 have been released and I was going crazy waiting for the last 3 to come out, tracking down the source material was one of the smartest decisions I've made in years. Loved this, even with the crazy line deliveries and some of the worst women character voices I have EVER heard. A Japanese Canadian woman in her 50s who has grown up in Montreal, speaking with a SOUTHERN USA ACCENT?! Why is Shane's dad George W. Bush??? I'll never recover. 5 stars.

Excellent story, not a great reader

This one makes me so happy. I love a slow burn and this was like the slowest of burns in the best way. Rivals to lovers done right! Hockey romance with actual hockey. The pacing of the spice was so perfect.

Like… to see them actually not like each other and for their relationship to take YEARS to develop. The reasons they can’t be together are so legit.

But for Shane to buy a whole ass apartment building for Ilya?Swoon. When Ilya made sandwiches for them. Swoon. When Shane helped Ilya grieve? Swoon. When Ilya visited Shane in the hospital? Swoon!

By the 75% mark when they’re at the cottage I was literally grinning while reading and feeling so happy for them.

Also I’m 90% sure I read this before never recorded it on Goodreads.

Audio book was top tier. The Russian accent was good and the hesitation in Shane’s character was well done. It was a fun listen.

I see why this is so beloved
