Publisher's Summary

You're overweight, and it isn't your fault. But it is your responsibility to take control of your health. This transformation is also within your power. You just don't know it yet. This is the message that Tommy Caldwell delivers in his book, Heavy Brain.

When we struggle to take control of our health, we blame ourselves. We believe we lack the willpower, commitment, and character necessary for long-term change. This couldn't be further from the truth, and it is this mental conflict that prevents us from succeeding in our fitness goals.

The truth is that struggling with our health is part of modern life:

  1. We were evolutionarily designed to crave high fat, high sugar, high-calorie foods
  2. We live in an environment of abundance with a food system that aims to take advantage of these evolutionary mismatches
  3. We face a high degree of stress and emotional overwhelm that drives us to self-medicate with food, alcohol, laziness, and technological distraction

We do not have an obesity epidemic - we have an epidemic of stress and emotional overwhelm. The good news is that if you understand the roots of your most unhealthy habits and behaviours, you can change them. This is what Tommy has become known for in teaching his readers.

This is not a diet book; you don't need another one of those. It is a personal journey of self-exploration and reconnecting with your true self in a way that allows you to thrive in your health. Join the thousands who have followed the Heavy Brain system and transformed their minds and bodies, once and for all.

What I needed. In fact, it's what we ALL need

I purchased this audiobook after reading the paperback copy. I'm glad I did. The principles Tommy lays out are so important for healing the roots of destructive eating behaviours, self-sabotage, and feelings of failure. His book as an intense read and could probably be simplified for the reader, but the audio version is so easy to absorb. If you have tried to lose weight in the past and failed- likely many times- this is the book you need to listen to.

Extremely disappointed

After reading all the reviews, I thought this would be a great book to help me with my snacking and overeating habits. Sadly, I was left disappointed.

To the authors credit, I do think this book was written for a specific type of person in mind, and for that type of person they will find a lot value.

The author often paints pictures of people dealing with issues of abuse, trauma, anxiety, self-image, and so on. He pitches that we overeat and snack, because just like booze, drugs, and playing on our phones, we use these vices to “take the edge off” and ignore our real problems.

For me, I just can’t relate. I tried many times to dig deep to relate to the authors suggested reasoning, and it just doesn’t click for me.

I don’t eat for those reasons. I eat because I get hungry, and then I think how delicious the food is, and then I start eating it and it IS so delicious, and so I keep eating until the point where I’ve eaten too much.

So I just can’t relate. The author actually paints a scenario 3-4 times in the book that I’m very acquainted with: long work day, tired, eat dinner, sit on couch and watch tv, go back and grab some snacks, and eat more than I clearly needed.

The problem with this is that the author claims I’m doing this because of stress and other underlying reasons. Look, I’m tired. Sorry if I want to watch some tv. In the book, every time the author paints this picture he suggest not doing the actions that led to me snacking. In other words, I’m not allowed to be tired. I’m not allowed to relax anymore. I’m not allowed to decompress and watch some Netflix.

That just seems ridiculous to me.

I hope this books helps some people, but for me, it was a waste of time and money.
