I loved reading this novel from the first page to the last sentence ❤️. It's a captivating read full of complex relationships and situations that pull you into the story, and keeps you invested.

Sometimes you read a book and you can’t stop talking about it. Allison Larkin’s Home of the American Circus is one such book. I had been waiting for the release of this one for a while, because I loved The People We Keep so much. For weeks, I sat with bated breath—my Audible credit in hand, waiting for it to drop. Like The People We Keep, this audiobook is narrated by the super-talented Julia Whelan (*chef’s kiss), and once I began listening, I was absolutely hooked.

Home of the American Circus tells the story of 30-year-old Freya Arnalds. Down on her luck, Freya begrudgingly returns to her hometown of Somers, New York, after inheriting the old family home from her estranged parents. When she gets there, she discovers that her teenage niece is secretly living in the house. Together, they face past traumas while they work to restore both the crumbling house and some fractured parts of their past.

This novel was really moving. Many parts of the story mirrored parts of my own past, and sometimes I had to take a little breather, but experiencing Freya’s growth was so inspiring.

Now, about the writing! Allison Larkin’s storytelling is so honest. She writes about the complexities of family, identity, and personal growth, and I sure do love me a rich, character-driven story!

This gorgeous novel is about love, connection, and all the messy, beautiful ways people try to show up for each other. It follows a woman navigating relationships, old wounds, and the complicated legacy of family. Ultimately, it’s about what it takes to heal, belong, and build something meaningful—even when the world doesn’t quite know what to do with someone who sees things differently.

If you haven’t picked this one up yet, do yourself a favour and add it to your list—you won’t regret it.
