Story
Best known as the host of Fox's Hell's Kitchen and Kitchen Nightmares, Gordon Ramsay is one of the most driven, successful, and irate chefs around. He has thrown Hollywood actresses out of his restaurants and is notorious for his anger, but his food has been served to numerous heads of state, and he is one of only three chefs in England whose restaurant is rated at three Michelin stars. Sometimes hilarious and frequently heartbreaking, this is Gordon Ramsay’s full life, from tenements and poverty to top-notch restaurants and fame.

In the 10 years since his classic Kitchen Confidential first alerted us to the idiosyncrasies and lurking perils of eating out, much has changed for the subculture of chefs and cooks, for the restaurant business and for Anthony Bourdain. Medium Raw explores those changes, tracking Bourdain's strange and unexpected voyage from journeyman cook to globe-traveling professional eater and drinker, and even to fatherhood. Bourdain takes no prisoners as he dissects what he's seen.

Story
As a young, unspectacular cook, David Chang opened a noodle restaurant in Manhattan’s East Village that should not have survived its first, misbegotten year. But, through sheer stubbornness and a series of utterly reckless choices, he became a chef who the New York Times once described as “the modern equivalent of Norman Mailer or Muhammad Ali”. In this memoir, Chang lays bare his self-doubt and ruminates on mental health.

From a young age, Andy Cohen knew two things: He was gay, and he loved television. Now presiding over Bravo's reality-TV empire, he started out as an overly talkative pop-culture obsessive, devoted to Charlie's Angels and All My Children - and to his mother, who received daily letters from him while he was at summer camp, usually reminding her to tape the soaps. In retrospect, it's hard to believe that everyone didn't know that Andy was gay; still, he remained in the closet until college. Finally out, he embarked on making a career out of his passion for television.

Story
From the reinvention of French food through the fine dining revolution in America, Daniel Boulud has been a witness to and a creator of today's food culture. A modern improviser with a classical foundation (a little rock 'n' roll and a lot of Mozart, he'd say), he speaks with the authority that comes from a lifetime of preparing, presenting, and thinking about food - an ancient calling with universal resonance. In Letters to a Young Chef, Boulud speaks not only of how to make a career as a chef in today's world, but also of why one should want to do so in the first place.

Anthony Bourdain saw more of the world than nearly anyone. His travels took him from the hidden pockets of his hometown of New York to a tribal longhouse in Borneo, from cosmopolitan Buenos Aires, Paris, and Shanghai to Tanzania’s utter beauty and the stunning desert solitude of Oman’s Empty Quarter - and many places beyond. In World Travel, a life of experience is collected into an entertaining, practical, fun and frank travel guide that gives listeners an introduction to some of his favorite places - in his own words.

In 2007 chef Grant Achatz seemingly had it made. He had been named one of the best new chefs in America by Food & Wine in 2002, received the James Beard Foundation Rising Star Chef of the Year Award in 2003, and in 2005 he and Nick Kokonas opened the conceptually radical restaurant Alinea, which was named Best Restaurant in America by Gourmet magazine. Then, Achatz was diagnosed with stage IV squamous cell carcinoma - tongue cancer.

Do wish it was unabridged though. . .
I am a massive Ramsay fan. He has such a passion, intensity and energy for his work it is incredibly inspiring. His story was so genuine and heartfelt and I absolutely loved it.
Also, not always the case when an author narrates their own story - I found his narration to be superb.

Gordon Ramsay Revealed
What did you love best about Humble Pie?
Gordon Ramsay is so much more than his over-bearing, sometimes caustic personality. Listening to his story gave an understanding of why he is so driven and holds such high expectations. It also shows that he has just as big a heart as his personality.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Humble Pie?
He lets us in to so much of his early personal life. His issues with his dad and how that shaped who he became spoke to me.
What does Gordon Ramsay bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
He is so kind of a person and that doesn't always come through when you watch his shows. Also, that he is such a strong person who has overcome adversity to come out on top.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I was lucky enough to be on a road trip and could listen to it in one sitting. I didn't stop as often as I normally would because I wanted to finish it.

Interesting Insight but Not a Tell All Biography
Would you consider the audio edition of Humble Pie to be better than the print version?
I have not read the print version but I would immediately answer yes. Gordon has such a unique way of delivering his thoughts that having him narrate his own book is what truly makes it entertaining and worth listening to. As with many, I enjoy when an author narrates their own book and this is no different. It felt like I was being told stories instead of reading a book about someone's life. I would have preferred to hear the unabridged version but it was still enjoyable. Some of his stories went into great detail while others just touched the surface: this was not a tell all autobiography as many would desire but it does give some background into Gordon Ramsay's life that otherwise would have been unknown to me. Being such a big fan of him, I was happy to get to know a little more about the real person he is.
What did you like best about this story?
I enjoyed hearing about Gordon's childhood. In his most formative years he had to deal with issues that are not easy and often lead to people taking a very dark path in life, as was the case with his brother. To hear about how this helped fuel his passion gave a little insight into what makes him tick.
What about Gordon Ramsay’s performance did you like?
Gordon's performance was great and I think made the book enjoyable. Any other narrator would not have done it justice.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
Restaurant King

Genuine and human
A genuine and heartfelt depiction of Ramsay’s difficult past, the formation of his core values, and how these values shape his impressive life and work to this day. In this biography, we get a look at the man behind the publicity, dispelling rumors and casting a candid light onto what can be called no less than a triumphant spirit. An inspiring read.
