One Drum draws from the foundational teachings of Ojibway tradition, the Grandfather Teachings. Focusing specifically on the lessons of humility, respect, and courage, the volume contains simple ceremonies that anyone anywhere can do, alone or in a group, to foster harmony and connection. Wagamese believed that there is a shaman in each of us, that we are all teachers, and in the world of the spirit, there is no right way or wrong way.

Saul Indian Horse is in critical condition. Sitting feeble in an alcoholism treatment facility, he is told that sharing his story will help relieve his agony. Though skeptical, he embarks on a heartbreaking journey from the present - and into the woods of Northern Ontario, where his life began in a snowy Ojibway camp. The tale that follows is one of great pain and great determination from Richard Wagamese, an author who "never seems to waste a shot" ( New York Times).

When Garnet Raven was three years old, he was taken from his home on an Ojibway Indian reserve and placed in a series of foster homes. Having reached his mid-teens, he escapes at the first available opportunity, only to find himself cast adrift on the streets of the big city. Having skirted the urban underbelly once too often by age 20, he finds himself thrown in jail. While there, he gets a surprise letter from his long-forgotten native family. The sudden communication from his past spurs him to return to the reserve following his release from jail.

Histoire
On August 17, 2014, the body of 15-year old runaway Tina Fontaine was found in Winnipeg's Red River. It was wrapped in material and weighted down with rocks. Red River Girl is a gripping account of that murder investigation and the unusual police detective who pursued the killer with every legal means at his disposal. The audiobook, like the movie Spotlight, chronicles the behind-the-scenes stages of a lengthy and meticulously planned investigation. It reveals characters and social tensions that bring vivid life to a story that made national headlines.

Histoire
Four chronically homeless people - Amelia One Sky, Timber, Double Dick and Digger - seek refuge in a warm movie theater when a severe Arctic front descends on the city. During what is supposed to be a one-time event, this temporary refuge transfixes them. They fall in love with this new world and, once the weather clears, continue their trips to the cinema. On one of these outings they meet Granite, a jaded and lonely journalist who has turned his back on writing “the same story over and over again” in favor of the escapist qualities of film, and an unlikely friendship is struck.

Histoire
There is one question Canadians have asked Jody Wilson-Raybould more than any other: What can I do to help advance reconciliation? This has been true from her time as a leader of British Columbia’s First Nations, as a Member of Parliament, as Minister of Justice and Attorney General, within business communities, and when having conversations with people. Whether speaking as individuals, communities, organizations, or governments, people want to take concrete and tangible action that will make real change. They just need to know how to get started, or to take the next step.

There have been many Clayton Thomas-Mullers: The child who played with toy planes as an escape from domestic and sexual abuse, enduring the intergenerational trauma of Canada's residential school system; the angry youngster who defended himself with fists and sharp wit against racism and violence, at school and on the streets of Winnipeg and small-town British Columbia; the tough teenager who, at 17, managed a drug house run by members of his family, and slipped in and out of juvie, operating in a world of violence and pain.

Histoire
This extraordinary account, originally published in 1973, bravely explores the poverty, oppression, alcoholism, addiction, and tragedy Maria endured throughout her childhood and into her early adult life, underscored by living in the margins of a country pervaded by hatred, discrimination, and mistrust. Laced with spare moments of love and joy, this is a memoir of family ties and finding an identity in a heritage that is neither wholly Indigenous or Anglo; of strength and resilience; of indomitable spirit.

Description
Two young sisters are taken from their home and family. Powerless to change their fortunes, they are separated, and each put into different foster homes. Yet over the years, the bond between them grows. As they each make their way in a society that is, at times, indifferent, hostile, and violent, one embraces her Métis identity, while the other tries to leave it behind. In the end, out of tragedy, comes an unexpected legacy of triumph and reclamation.

First book, first review
I'm glad I listened to it. It's actually the first book I listened to from the app. I think the story was very well written and narrated. It had a lot of sad parts and a lot of parts that made you think and have compassion and understanding.

A good piece overall
Michaela Washburn does a tremendous job navigating the dialogue and the range of emotions in the novel when the characters voices come through. However, I find that when she is working through the narration, or specifically the inner voice of April, the tone is typically one note, and often doesn't match the surrounding scene. The narrative voice could be summarizing the events as if they were written in bullet point, yet the dialogue is nuanced and wrought with emotion and inflection. Personally, it caused a jarring experience for most of the novel. Though in the later chapters, particularly beginning around the trial, and especially the final chapter with the diary, Washburn remedies this and takes her time to give April's voice reflection and pause. It made for an ending to the book that, for this listener, resonated much more than the earlier portions.

Trigger Warning
I would caution Native readers while reading this book. it is very good, & worth reading, but it is ultimately about Native trauma, & can be something of a rough read. So take space while listening.

Loves this Book!!
This book was so amazing I couldn't put it down. I relate to it so much, being a "halfbreed" myself and experiencing a lot of that kind of stuff myself. A book I will definitely recommend to others. Very pleased with my purchase. The narrator does a good job as well. ♡♡♡

Moving, raw and inviting
Great piece of Indigenous writing I am not surprised it won awards and has been a Canadian staple for years. It could hardly put it down. With the exceptions of the violent acts in Chapter 11 which I did not read, it was an amazing book. Well done.

heart breaking what these children go thru
this was one of the saddest stories I have listened to. Living close to a couple of Reserves, I see the struggles, but you never really know the back ground. I couldn't help but feel the sadness and turmoil these girls went thru.

Great listen.
Love the book and have read it multiple times, listening to it is completely different. I picked up on things I didn't remember from reading the book myself. The narrator did a good job telling the story. It was almost like you were there with April while she was reading.
