About this listen

“Simply put—and I do not say this lightly—Incidents Around the House is the most purely effective horror novel I have ever read.”Neil McRobert, Esquire

A chilling horror novel about a haunting, told from the perspective of a young girl whose troubled family is targeted by an entity she calls “Other Mommy,” from the New York Times bestselling author of Bird Box

“This book is the monster that lives inside your closet.”—Grady Hendrix, New York Times bestselling author of How to Sell a Haunted House

LOCUS AWARD FINALIST • BRAM STOKER AWARD NOMINEE

To eight-year-old Bela, her family is her world. There’s Mommy, Daddo, and Grandma Ruth. But there is also Other Mommy, a malevolent entity who asks her every day: “Can I go inside your heart?”

When horrifying incidents around the house signal that Other Mommy is growing tired of asking Bela the question over and over, Bela understands that unless she says yes, her family will soon pay.

Other Mommy is getting restless, stronger, bolder. Only the bonds of family can keep Bela safe, but other incidents show cracks in her parents’ marriage. The safety Bela relies on is about to unravel.

But Other Mommy needs an answer.

Incidents Around the House is a chilling, wholly unique tale of true horror about a family as haunted as their home.

I just finished this book and from the beginning to the end, it was fantastic. The chilling descriptions gave me goosebumps, the innocence of the first person from an eight year old was amazing!

An unsettling story

I had a really hard time getting into the story because of the little girl voice. Once i got going I really enjoyed it...but the ending!!! Noooo don't leave us like that!

Great story

I got annoyed with it by the end. It was ok. Typical scary movie type book. Kid narrated it very well

Decent

A book has not affected me in this way for a long time. I would often have to put it down for a while because there was only so much I could take. The story being told from the point of view of a little girl is heart wrenching, tragic and horrifying. Couple that with a deep undercurrent of betrayal of happiness and innocence makes the story especially powerful. The narrator does a fantastic job.
The pacing of the story is relentless in a good way but in some places it sacrifices believability and clarity. Such as in the ending where it felt rushed. The larger parts of the ending were easy enough but I felt like I had to fill in too many blanks myself. Overall this is quintessential horror at its most riveting.

A haunting and often heartbreaking story

Wait too long and rambling not as scary as they make it seem- very hard to focus when all the narration sounds similar

Boring

if you have small children this book will hit so hard. An amazing and heartbreaking story that makes you feel helpless and hugging your children a little harder the next time you see them.

The story probably effects me a little more than others because my daughter sounds exactly like Bella. 5 Stars, Definitely worth the listen. 💔

Absolutely heart breaking

All I can say is, worth the credit. This book is a favourite for me, one of the scariest I’ve read in a while. The narrator is awesome and this story had me hooked from the sample. Highly recommended.

It took me a long time to tackle this story after my initial beginning. The narrator was difficult for me to listen to, but over time, it grew on me. Overall, it's a creepy story and I found the chat near the end to be interesting so four stars it is.

Creepy Story

Great story, but PHENOMENAL narrator doing the child’s voice and perspective. Nice creepiness to it all.

Give this narrator an Oscar!

The dialogue is odd, almost like it was translated from a different language. especially the long monologuing near the end. The adults telling stories to a kid with flowery vocabulary and complicated terms. Definitely doesn't sound like parents trying to explain things to a kid. The high-school play level acting also doesn't help. I felt like a 17 or old was reading me their first try at a bad play. This isn't how people speak, especially when speaking to a child.

Written by someone who has never spoken to a kid?
