Publisher's Summary

As a child, Artie Kipps is left in the care of his aunt and uncle, who have a toy shop in New Romney, Kent. His friends are Sid Pornick and his sister Ann, with whom he falls childishly in love. At the age of 14 Artie is apprenticed to Mr Shalford at the Folkestone Drapery Bazaar, and he loses touch with the Pornicks.

Life as an apprentice is grim, and he joins an evening class to improve himself. It is run by Helen Washingham, who is beautiful, artistic and socially smart, and Kipps is bedazzled by her.

One night he is run over by a man on a bicycle. The perpetrator is Chitterlow, a would-be playwright, who takes Kipps to his lodgings and gives him so much whiskey that he fails to return to his lodgings at the Drapery Bazaar before it is locked for the night.

As a result, he is sacked. Chitterlow shows him a newspaper advertisement and from it Kipps discovers that his grandfather has left him a fortune.

Kipps now begins to discover who he really is and what his true ambitions in life really are.
