Publisher's Summary

Look Homeward, Angel, the 1929 debut novel of Thomas Clayton Wolfe (1900-1938), is an autobiographical coming-of-age story. The character Eugene Gant is believed to be Wolfe himself. The novel primarily covers the time from Eugene's birth in 1900 to his leaving home at the age of 19.

The setting is a fictional town based on his hometown in North Carolina. Eugene begins his education at UNC as an alienated and out-of-place youth but becomes active in extracurricular activities like the debate club, philosophy association, campus magazine, and literary journal. Being extremely sensitive, the death of a roommate and of his brother severely affects him, as does a disappointment in love. After completing his studies and despite his mother’s pleading, he leaves North Carolina.
