About this listen
An Instant New York Times Bestseller
A #1 LibraryReads and Indie Next Pick!
From the New York Times best-selling author of The Love Hypothesis comes a new STEMinist rom-com in which a scientist is forced to work on a project with her nemesis—with explosive results.
Like an avenging, purple-haired Jedi bringing balance to the mansplained universe, Bee Königswasser lives by a simple code: What would Marie Curie do? If NASA offered her the lead on a neuroengineering project—a literal dream come true after years scraping by on the crumbs of academia—Marie would accept without hesitation. Duh. But the mother of modern physics never had to co-lead with Levi Ward.
Sure, Levi is attractive in a tall, dark, and piercing-eyes kind of way. And sure, he caught her in his powerfully corded arms like a romance novel hero when she accidentally damseled in distress on her first day in the lab. But Levi made his feelings toward Bee very clear in grad school—archenemies work best employed in their own galaxies far, far away.
Now, her equipment is missing, the staff is ignoring her, and Bee finds her floundering career in somewhat of a pickle. Perhaps it’s her occipital cortex playing tricks on her, but Bee could swear she can see Levi softening into an ally, backing her plays, seconding her ideas…devouring her with those eyes. And the possibilities have all her neurons firing. But when it comes time to actually make a move and put her heart on the line, there’s only one question that matters: What will Bee Königswasser do?

Rue Siebert might not have it all, but she has enough: a few friends she can always count on, the financial stability she yearned for as a kid, and a successful career as a biotech engineer at Kline, one of the most promising start-ups in the field of food science. Her world is stable, pleasant, and hard-fought. Until a hostile takeover and its offensively attractive front man threatens to bring it all crumbling down.

Story
The many lives of theoretical physicist Elsie Hannaway have finally caught up with her. By day, she’s an adjunct professor, toiling away at grading labs and teaching thermodynamics in the hopes of landing tenure. By other day, Elsie makes up for her non-existent paycheck by offering her services as a fake girlfriend, tapping into her expertly honed people-pleasing skills to embody whichever version of herself the client needs. Honestly, it’s a pretty sweet gig—until her carefully constructed Elsie-verse comes crashing down.

Viola Bowen has the chance of a lifetime: to design a video game based on her all-time favorite book series. The only problem? Her co-lead is Jesse F-ing Andrews, a.k.a. her arch-nemesis. Jesse has made it abundantly clear over the years that he wants nothing to do with her–and Viola has no idea why. When their bosses insist a wintery retreat is the perfect team-building exercise, Viola can’t think of anything worse. Being freezing cold in a remote mountain lodge knowing Jesse is right next door? No, thank you.

What the critics say
“With her sophomore novel, Ali Hazelwood proves that she is the perfect writer to show that science is sexy as hell, and that love can ‘STEM’ from the most unlikely places. She’s my newest must-buy author.” (Jodi Picoult, number one New York Times best-selling author of Wish You Were Here)
“I cannot get enough of her brand of brainy romance!...Writing with an emotionally brilliant and witty pen, Hazelwood is an absolute romance powerhouse.” (Christina Lauren, New York Times best-selling authors of The Unhoneymooners)
“Gloriously nerdy and sexy, with on-point commentary about women in STEM.” (Helen Hoang, New York Times best-selling author of The Heart Principle)
“STEMinists, assemble. Your world is about to be rocked.” (Elena Armas, international best-selling author of The Spanish Love Deception)

Unlikeable heroine
The book had potential- but I don’t think I have ever read about a main character that was less likeable than Bee. It’s like the author tried to include every ‘woke’ idea in one person/book. She was completely whiny and obnoxious, and every time I thought I might be enjoying the story, she would say something stupid. Who complains about a gentleman opening a door for you?? Disappointing.

Great.
Love the science in this one, the fact that the protagonist is a tattooed, pierced, purple-haired neuroscientist. Thoroughly enjoyable. Ali Hazelwood book = easy decision. Can’t wait for her next book.

Amazing performance!
If you're looking for a story really similar to Love Hypothesis and are expecting a book with the same mold, this is the one. I'd consider it even better. It really gripped me, the performance was really nicely done.

The narrator did an INCREDIBLE job bringing each and every word and emotion to life. The story was great, I would say even better than The Love Hypothesis.

Cute, smart and easy…
Super enjoyable for an easy-read. I enjoyed that while it was a little predictable, it was smart and did not bore. It was exactly what I was looking for, something to listen to on a long drive that didn’t need a lot of thought, but was thoroughly entertaining. Narrator does a great job.

The Love Hypothesis?
If you liked The Love Hypothesis, you’ll like Ali Hazelwood’s sophomore novel as well… because it’s the exact same story. Love on the Brain may be better written, have some quirky side characters, and a few extra NSFW chapters, but I’m pretty sure it’s just repurposed scenes from the cutting room floor of her first novel.
