It’s Robin Hobb so obviously the characters are deep and the story gives you lots of time to sit with them.

But holy smokes I have to take so many breaks because of the reader, the characters all have the same voices or whack accents. And no idea why she drags the last word of every single sentence.

So I'm invested in this series and this is the only reason I'm willing to continue to listen to this narrator. I've just discovered she's also narrating the next trio of books 😵‍💫

She is SO SLOW. I listen at 1.3 speed to just get normal talking speed, and often bump it up to 1.5. she pronounces words oddly, drags on the last word of sentences for days, and has a such an odd accent for some of the characters that it distracts from the story.

All that said, the story is pretty good. I'm going to power through book 3 because I'm invested in the story line. this narrator though...horrible.

The exciting, dragon/pirate adventure continues in THE MAD SHIP, where the characters continue to make choices and uncover mysteries that will change the world as they know it.

I was very interested in the way certain characters interacted with each other. There was a great deal of development from everyone, especially Malta, something I was grateful for. Every character is unique and motivated by something, whether it be survival, power, or control.

The world building is strong, with new places being revealed to make the setting feel much more immersive. The action kept the story moving fast and remained inventive, with many characters in deeper danger than they could realize.

This is such a unique fantasy world with an unforgettable concept and strong characters. I'm so happy I gave it a try and can't wait to see how it ends!

I am glad I made it through the first book in this series. I really enjoyed the characters and loved the story of the serpents, dragons, ships. Would love a book on the old city of Trehaug!

very original series, interesting caracters. It's the slow build that makes me not enjoy the serie as much as I would like !

I have come back a third time over the years to re-listen. What a joy these books are. High quality writing, storyline intricate and compelling. Narrators voice is perfect for the story. This is definitely a top 5 for me, rates with Wheel of Time and LOTR.

I am going to read all the RotE books, after finishing part 2 of this trilogy I’m indoctrinated this woman is one of the best fantasy writers ever

I read the farseer trilogy and for the most part enjoyed it (especially book 2). I've been disappointed in this trilogy though. The first book was ok but I almost feel like nothing happens for most of this book. And my god, too much feminism! Everything up to the dragons goes on and on about how strong woman are and how they don't need a man. Like ok lady, we get it. No need to smack me in the head with it.

I respect the author generally but this was mediocre
